not if they can't help it... if you're under the age of 25 they try to get you to take the course... but you can try to get it reduced in court

i took it... almost killed me, granted i did have an odd instructor who apparently had really bad road rage to the point he busted a guy up with a baseball bat for driving too slow...

well they will bump mine down to improper equipment if I take the class

it probably would have been reduced to improper equipment without me having to take the class if I hadn't received so many speeding tickets

It's been a few years, but I took it. Don't remember much about it except is extremely boring. And it didn't last the entire 8 hours or whatever...but still, it wasn't fun.

^ Mine was reduced to improper equipment as well.

^^^

Depends on the municipality

I have never been to traffic school, and I've probably had a dozen or more tickets

[Edited on December 6, 2012 at 12:07 AM. Reason : Maybe even well over a dozen...lost track a while back]

^^I had two in one night once. One in Bama and one in ATL (when I was stationed in Pensacola). I told the cop in ATL I had received one earlier that night...his response was "I guess you didn't learn your lesson the first time!"

I took one when I was 16. It is completely worthless, just like anything related to Driver's Ed these days.

It's beyond me why you don't have to learn how to actually handle a fucking car when getting your driver's license. Any fucking moron can steer and push a pedal or two.

Maybe things have changed or maybe it was too long ago to remember, but I feel like there are a number of things I took from driver's ed in high school that made me a better driver, and I get pissed off when people are ignorant of the laws.

I've taken a traffic safety course about how to design traffic safety measures for roadway construction

I never had to take drivers ed because the teacher had a stroke. When we all got to the cafeteria they told us he couldn't make it and gave us the test, if we passed we could go ahead and sign up for the driving part. Thanks dude.

Being knowledgeable about traffic laws has very little (anything?) do to with knowing how to properly handle a car in a dangerous situation from a Newtonian Physics point of view.

It's beyond me how any sort of driver's ed curriculum never makes you intentionally stand on the brakes or perform an emergency avoidance maneuver.

I hope you extend these feelings towards police, because they are some of the worst offenders even though it is their duty to enforce the law.

True, but it has plenty to do with safe driving in general.

^That pisses me off even more

part of my on-road exam at the dmv was to accelerate and then stand on the brake when the dude told me to

but you're operating under the assumption that the purpose of driver's ed, driver's licenses, exams, etc. is to keep us safe on the road. they are cash cows for the state. just like speeding tickets.
