I just want to know what kind of Ranch dressing I can buy at the grocery that tastes like the ranch you get with wings in 90% of restaurants

Hidden Valley, etc is garbage and most ranch dressing I've gotten from grocery stores is too thick and/or tangy and tries to be too fancy or some shit

Do most restaurants make their own, or is the best ranch just some cheap stuff from Sysco?

Put whole milk into a little plastic cup and let it sit out for a couple days; there's your ranch dressing

Maybe the hidden valley packets you mix with sour cream? I think the taste and texture are completely different from the bottled stuff.

Hidden Valley created ranch, have some fucking respect.

I don't understand why people like watery ranch instead of thicker ones. I'd like it to stick on the wing when I dip it instead of running off

I think it's kraft or hidden valley ranch mix, in a packet, that tastes the best.

IIRC, this is pretty good, and isn't as thick/rich as the shelf-stable stuff.

I make my own. It's really easy, cheap, and tastes better than any ranch I have had at a restaurant imo.

1 Hidden Valley Ranch DIP packet (Make sure you get the dip, not the dressing)
1 cup sour cream
1 cup mayonaise
Milk or cream

Combine everything except the milk in a mixing bowl. Add milk to reach desired consistency (some people like it runny, some like it thick)

I'm super picky about ranch, and Marzetti is by far the best store-bought ranch. It is in the refrigerated section (for me.. near the cottage cheese, yogurt, veggie dips, etc).

Marzetti's Caesar dressing is also really good.

i haven't had anything but homemade vinaigrette in ages

equal parts balsamic and olive oil, add some ginger, garlic, mustard, and lemon juice and you're good to go

i do make my own caesar dressing, though...but with anchovies, as it's "real" caesar instead of that shit they sell in bottles

^ not sure. Usually when I make a batch it's gone in 2 weeks or so, so I know it's good for at least that long. I would assume it would be the same as the shelf life of sour cream, since mayo lasts pretty much forever. Assuming you keep it refrigerated, of course.

^ if you don't have any buttermilk around when you want to try it, adding 1tbsp of lemon juice to 1 cup (minus 1tbsp) of whole milk will give you a VERY similar taste

i've heard you can use white vinegar, too, but i've only ever used lemon juice

Solomon's/Saints and Scholars has the best ranch I've ever tasted. They make it themselves

Ken's Buttermilk Ranch is used at several restaurants I go to.

I also enjoy the runnier ranch dressings you find at eating establishments. I have not been able to find a source for that type of ranch. Perhaps its homemade or made with a seasoning packet.

^ It's most likely just thinned out with milk/cream (or maybe even water) to get more servings out of a batch. I find that steak houses are notorious for this.

The cheap Food Dog brand Ranch (not the buttermilk kind they sell) is actually my preference. I'd take it over Hidden Valley any day...and even started to prefer over Ken's, as it's not as thick.

Still not as runny as house made restaurant style though

When I worked at a steakhouse we made our own. I don't remember exactly what we did, but we made it in five gallon buckets, and the "ranch" we use was Hidden Valley packets. We also made our own thousand island and it was 75% mayonnaise.
