Anyone signed up for this yet? I requested an invite, but haven't received the email yet. I'm wondering how the selection compares to Netflix. 12/24/2012 5:13:36 PM |

I've requested an account as well.
From what I've read, the collection won't be as vast as Netflix's. But I think they'll have newer releases sooner. From what I read again, they signed pretty much the same 90day release thing they have with some studios for the kiosks. So the movies will be available 90 days after dvd release (at least for some studios) -- which is much sooner than netflix for the most part. I don't recall which studios that was exactly. 12/24/2012 9:52:43 PM |

What distinguishes this service from Netflix / Hulu / etc. ? 12/24/2012 9:55:27 PM |
rjrumfel All American 23027 Posts user info edit post |
For starters, for $8/month you get unlimited watch instant and 4 credits for the kiosk, if you want to go through the trouble of going out and getting them.
I'm just hoping they have a better library. 12/24/2012 11:05:18 PM |

Really the same thing that sets Netflix apart from Hulu, and the two of them apart from Amazon... content. I suspect redbox instant will, generally, have more major newer releases since the redbox kiosks do compared to netflix now (and they seem to be penning the same deals for instant). But there's content Netflix will have that Redbox instant will not.
For me, the more of these services the better (ideally, one or two would simply have more content but I can live with this just as well). Starting next year, I will get rid of cable and will use these types of services almost exclusively. I could sign up for 10 of these things at $8/mo. and wouldn't come close to what I pay for cable. The only think I'm worried about missing out on is Monday/thursday night football and some college football. But I can always go to bars. I just wish we could subscribe to hbo go without having hbo through a cable provider. 12/24/2012 11:29:21 PM |

They moved the redbox at my local grocery store from right beside the doors to some random fucking corner that gets no foot traffic.
Geniuses at work there.
Also, funny that it's sponsored by Verizon since they don't even have unlimited data.

I stopped getting RedBox because there was always a line to browse or return, and they were often out of what I watned.
Doubt I will get RedBox Instant unless it has some advantage over Netflix. If it does, I'll switch, but I only need one service.

^^You can check what's in stock online and reserve it, that's what I usually do. Still have to wait in line though. 12/25/2012 7:43:56 PM |

I rarely have to stand in a line at a redbox. And if there is a line, I look up what movies are in at that location on my phone with the redbox app, and then reserve the movie so nobody in front of me can get it. And if I know I need to go out for something, I just reserve it well in advance. But I'll also often just order movies ondemand if I have no other reason to go out... I usually keep them longer than a day anyhow so the price difference is minimum when it's all said and done for me. 12/26/2012 5:13:50 PM |

4 people waiting for redbox at HT today while one browsed. When I left only one of those 4 was gone, 1 was browsing and 2 were still waiting. Fuck that. 12/26/2012 6:58:37 PM |

I haven't, but I only requested an invite this past weekend. What's odd to me is that I can't find a review of the beta. I've only looked a little, but all I can find are articles talking about the service in general. And some say the invites are "rolling out", but the authors don't seem to have accounts.
The lack of reviews makes me wonder if they've actually sent any access codes out yet. 12/28/2012 2:44:25 AM |

They sent me a code for a free redbox rental today.

It’s just a taste of the fun that will follow: Unlimited streaming movies + 4 DVD credits FREE for 1 glorious month. And just $8 a month after that. Pretty cool, huh? Hang tight, we'll have more news in the weeks ahead." |

I got my invite about a week ago and I haven't used it a single time. Selection seems to be worse than Netflix and Amazon. I haven't really found anything on it that isn't available on the other 2 that I had any interest in watching. I might check it out again in a few months but I will not be extending my trial into a paid membership when it ends. 1/15/2013 6:48:06 PM |

I finally got an invite a couple of days ago.
Nothing about it stands out. The more recent movies that I'm interested seem to all be stuff that is on Netflix. There a ton of "B" movies that I would never watch. I do watch a b-movie every now and then... but these just look bad.
I don't really see much that sets it apart from Netflix, so I won't continue the subscription. Hulu+ at least offers something that Netflix doesn't. They compliment each other. This is just more of the same with a whole lot of extra junk at this point. 1/23/2013 7:54:16 PM |

As did I. The only good movies in their streaming selection are those you have already seen. Doesn't make sense to spend 8 bucks a month for 4 kiosk rentals unless they get their streaming selection up. 7/6/2013 3:13:20 PM |

When Redbox first came out, it seemed that their selection of new releases was good, but over the years it seems like it dwindled a lot and now they just put all kinds of random movies in there.
I will not be subscribing to Redbox instant. 7/6/2013 3:56:55 PM |
