"In 2010, the network's managing director, Tony Burman, blamed a "very aggressive hostility" from the Bush administration for reluctance among cable and satellite companies to show the network.

Even so, Al-Jazeera has garnered respect for its ability to build a serious news product in a short time. But there may be a culture clash at the network. Dave Marash, a former "Nightline" reporter who worked for Al-Jazeera in Washington, said he left the network in 2008 in part because he sensed an anti-American bias there."

I might have to quote this next time someone asks me "what do you mean by a systematic bias of all news sources?"

So there wasn't an American news network that aligns with your ideology, but an Arab oil-backed news network that served as a megaphone for bin Laden and Al-qaeda does?

"But [Current TV] has settled into a more conventional format of political talk television with a liberal bent. Gore worked on-air as an analyst during its recent election night coverage."

Aw man, you mean I can't tune in and listen to Al Gore blabber about global warming??

None of your complaints are valid against English Al Jazeera, in fact much of their coverage of current middle east activities has been the best I've read.

a lot of the reporting i've seen from al-jazeera is pretty un-biased. it's not pro-american, if that's what you mean, but it's usually pretty objective.

It's impossible for it not to. While I agree that objectivity when presenting facts is generally a good thing, even deciding which facts are worth reporting is in itself a form of bias.

Al Jazeera is shit, except for their on-site reporting of Middle East affairs. They spit out a series of absurd "feature stories" claiming that tens of thousands of people in the Gulf of Mexico are sick and dying of cancer and respiratory diseases due to Deepwater Horizon and the dispersants used, but that the federal government is colliding with BP to cover it up. The pieces had no evidence to back them up, only secondhand sob stories and wild allegations from environmentalists without any attempts at verification.

I enjoy hearing the news from other perspectives, but shoddy journalism and reflexive bias against US and corporate interests doesn't make for quality reporting.

The English language Al-Jazeera is good in that it does provide a reasonable view of the news from a Middle Eastern, third world perspective particularly in terms of their editorial decisions. I don't think they're inherently more biased than most other news outlets, only that the viewpoint they present tends to be one not as commonly seen inside American and Western European media circles. Thus, a bit more shocking when you first hear it.

I think you do need to be careful not to mix their editorials/commentaries with their actual news coverage. Their commentators are pretty extreme, but it's no different than some of the crazies you read in the editorial pages. Nor would I consider Al-Jazeera's television news any worse than the mainstream crap currently on cable TV.

Also, it's definitely not fair to compare Al-Jazeera to RT. The later literally ran stories about possible UFO wrecks in the oceans and other wild-ass stuff. The former hasn't done anything like that.

It also seems Gore rushed to sale the company to lock in the lower tax rates of 2012.

AJE is the best news because they don't waste time on tabloid shit. they have some VERY good indepth stories too. the US gov't doesn't like it because they can't control it. I personally need it because it's a nice intermediary between American and Chinese interests. they will break news without spin so I can decide if I give a fuck with a minimum amount of effort.

Now that TWC is planning to carry Al-Jazeera America after all, gaze upon the wingnut loons demanding that they carry Fox News 2 a.k.a. The Blaze: https://www.facebook.com/twc

Lol. There are like 3 people in this country watching Al-Jazeera America.

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/al-jazeera-america-had-a-rough-ratings-week-some-shows-hit-zero-in-key-demo/

I just googled the ratings - I don't know what slant that article above has.

I'd probably watch it a lot more if it was just the regular Al Jazeera English that they had available online for free before the switch to Al Jazeera America.

Faultlines, Listening Post, and Inside Story are three pretty awesome programs that were available for free and on demand in the US on the Al Jazeera English website (and youtube) before they made the switch. Now those programs are blacked out and only available on TV during regular scheduled hours. And with my cable package, they don't even have Al Jazeera America available in HD, which is straight up wack.

Anyway, they'd be wise, in my opinion, to re-introduce their streaming content if they wanted to engage the younger audience that lives on the internet. I'll be damned if I'm gonna tailor my schedule so that I can watch the news. That's some old-people logic.
