Apparently my mom called AT&T yesterday to see about saving some money by getting rid of their landline. She has her phone/cellphone/internet all bundled together, and she still had the unlimited data plan on the cellphones. All she wanted to do was drop the home phone and change it to another cell phone.

However, when she talked to the AT&T rep, the rep tricked her into making a change to the cellphone plan which, you guessed it, made her lose the unlimited data. The rep said that the new plan wouldn't be umlimited, but it would cost less than her current plan. However, upon further inspection, the new plan costs more, which my mother even noted, but by the time my mom said so, the rep had already made the change. To top it off, when they then tried to change the landline to a cellphone, it was going to cost even more.

So, my mother did what anyone would do: she said "put the plan back the way it was." To this, the rep responded that the plan couldn't be put back because "they don't offer that plan anymore."

I'm calling AT&T tomorrow to get this straight, because it's total bullshit that they tricked my mom into changing her plan to a worse and more expensive plan by lying to her. Anybody had any success with this kind of thing? What did you say or what pertinent consumer protections did you bring up on the line to get them to put the plan back? Or, am I just gonna have to rely on the tried-and-true method of threatening to cancel everything? Does the NC 3-day law for purchases cover this scenario?

One does not simply get unlimited data back.

well, i successfully derailed this thread

all kidding aside, you're not going to have an easy time. most carriers are phasing out unlimited data, and the only way i see you guys getting it back is if the call was recorded and they can actually verify the rep deceived her.

i think my bf's mom had that issue. AT&T pushed her into a new plan that wasnt unlimited saying she would save money (lies). when she spoke to someone the next day (after talking to him) she mentioned that she heard that the plans were being phased out and that she had been a customer for over 11 years and she would hate to leave. They ended up giving her the unlimited plan back without a hassle.

this is an easy one. if this transaction occured fairly recently call in to AT&T customer care and explain the situation. Ask to be transferred to the retentions department. tell them there was a lot of miscommunication (don't try to throw the rep under the bus. trust me on this). If they can confirm that she DID in fact have the unlimited plan they will put in a "case" to have it restored

The rep probably cannot make the change to the old plan, but if you can talk to an account manager the account manager can roll it back to the old plan as long as it is within a few days.

i got unlimited data back after splitting a family plan and losing unlimited data

i just went to the AT&T store and threw a penalty flag at them since i'd previously had unlimited data, and since it was the next business day, they restored my unlimited data plan in under 5 minutes no questions asked

file a complaint with the better business bureau. they will respond quickly and pretty much do whatever you want to make it right
