My home monitor (18" acer) is on the way out, so I'm thinking about replacing it. I only use it for browsing, windows explorer, MS office, etc.

I have 24" widescreen Dell at the office which would be fine for home use, though I wasn't looking to put much money into a new monitor for home use (like <$30). However, I could get a new monitor for work and take the one I have there home

At work the only intensive use it will see is AutoCAD Civil 3D. Machine is running W7.

So, what to do? Craigslist for a cheapo $30 monitor, or spend some money a new work monitor, and if so, what do you suggest? If going the new work monitor route, I don't care to spend hundreds... $1-200?

You can get a Dell 24" LED for ~$150 that's 1080p. I believe they're TN panels but sufficient enough for what you want to do.

I don't see any reason not to go with a new monitor in your situation. If you go the work route, are you spending their money or your money? If theirs, try to get them to spring for a Dell Ultrasharp. You're an engineer running CAD, you might be able to sell them on a good panel. The 24" ultrasharp is $370 but that's for an IPS LED with a height/tilt/swivel adjustable stand, plus in my own experience (10 years of supporting Dell products) the Ultrasharp line are extremely durable and long-lived. If you're dropping your own coin (for a work monitor?) or management won't spring for that, you could go with one of the lower-line Dell models ($230 for professional series, $150 as ^ mentioned for E-series) or perhaps Viewsonic.

^good luck. You can get a non-ips 24" for under 200, or you can get a 22" ips for under 200.
