Selling my 2010 Camaro.... wondering if you guys have any recommended places to go to sell it? Trying to avoid dealing with trade in pains with dealership.

Craigslist, if you can wait. Carmax if you can't.

- Craigslist has worked for me in the past.
- Autotrader has worked when Craigslist failed.
- Unless you want to sell it for $4k less than you can get by selling it yourself don't waste your time with Carmax.
- Dealership trade-ins aren't always a pain. They have an incentive to make it worthwhile if you're ready to sign the papers on a new vehicle. And there are tax benefits...Say you are buying a $29k vehicle and they give you $19k for your trade in; you will only pay taxes on the $10k difference in NC versus paying taxes on $29k if you don't do the trade in. Just saying you shouldn't write off the trade-in unless you've already spoken to the dealer about it. You can always negotiate a fair price on the vehicle you're buying and play hardball on the trade. It would certainly be easier than selling the Camaro yourself, so you have to place some value on the convenience of just driving to the dealership with one vehicle and driving home in your new one.

^, ^^ thanks for the suggestions - i kinda had a feeling i didn't want to go the Carmax route if i could help it

^ definitely some value in getting away from a lot of the hassle of selling independently. i've only taken it to one dealership so far to have a look at it. before the guy laid eyes on the car he started trying to lowball and lecture me about how they need to make a profit. that experience didn't really help much. hoping i can go back and deal with someone a little better and hopefully hit up a couple other dealerships.

The last time I went to a dealer they told me they were offering "$2k above book value on trade ins" that day because they were trying to meet a certain number of sales by the end of the month and they were desperate to get the last few cars sold.

When it came time to talk money they offered me $8k for my car initially. I just laughed and asked him to show me the book that lists my car's value at $6k. I basically called him out on his lie that they were offering "$2k above book value" that day. It took him three trips to talk to the sales manager and he finally came back offering $14k. I think the key was that I didn't even entertain any of their offers or come back with a counter offer. I didn't hesitate or even put any thought into taking them...I just immediately told them that I wouldn't even consider their offer each time one was presented to me until they were in the range that I would accept. I was in the position of power because I didn't need a new car and the vehicle they were offering wasn't scarce at all. I think it sent the message that I was only going to accept a deal if a really good one was presented to me.
