In Raleigh this weekend. Anyone been before? Are credit cards generally accepted?

I am looking for a compact .22 revolver and concealed holster. I will probably end up spending ~$500.

I've used a credit card the last few times I've been.

I imagine that this one will be insane though.

this will end well.

If you do decide to go, get there EARLY. like, pick a time that you think is too early to get there, then arrive 1 hour earlier than that. and be ready to wait in line for anything/everything.

cash is always better

yes, they all take credit cards. you don't want to deal with the ones that don't anyway.

don't forget your permit

^ so I'm not very educated on this topic in general.

what do you mean, don't forget your permit? Do I need a permit to purchase a gun at the show?

You need a permit to purchase a pistol.

A handgun from a dealer? yes.

And if you don't have a permit by now, you won't get one by this weekend.

I realize rules change, but when I bought my Ruger 9mm, I definitely did not have a permit. They just ran a background check.

Has that changed in the past ~2 years?

You can buy private party out in the parking lot. But a dealer can't legally sell you a pistol at a gun show if you don't have a pistol permit.

Nor can any dealer in NC for that matter.

Can someone direct me to where you would get a pistol permit. a google search for "pistol permit raleigh nc" proved unfruitful

Go to the Wake co. sheriff's office on Salisbury St. and get one. $5 for a permit that allows you to buy, I think 5 pistols.

Most definitely not. Gotta do it through the Sheriff's Dept. Usually takes at least 7 business days, but with everyone freaking out about Obama "taking thur guns" they are probably swamped. I'd plan on at least 2 weeks to get a permit. Good news is that you can get 5 at a time, so spend the money and get all 5.

^ and it's $5 per firearm, iirc. but it's been 8 years since I applied, so I might be wrong.

5 dollars for each permit, you can purchase up to 5 permits at a time. However, it'll be weeks before they call you to pick them up.

you need a Concealed Handgun Permit or a Handgun Purchase Permit to buy a handgun, period. doesn't matter if it's from a "dealer" (Federal Firearms Licensee) or an individual. if you buy a handgun without either of these permits, then you have illegally purchased a handgun.

no, it is not. there is no "gun registration" in NC.

The above posters saying "you can buy from an individual in a parking lot" are wrong. To buy ANY handgun in NC from ANY seller (private or dealer) you must have either a pistol purchase permit or a concealed carry license.

You can NOT legally buy a handgun with just a background check. You MUST have a PP or CCW.

^^^ And that handgun is most likely hot to begin with. I know I wouldn't sell to anyone without getting that permit so there's the paper trail should that gun get used in a robbery.

your plan was pretty doomed from the start. that gun show is gonna be packed to the gills. i wouldn't doubt if folks camp out the night before. i've had to wait 45 mins or more to get in during recent years. we're seeing the biggest wave of panic buying, price gouging, and shortages ever experienced by the gun industry. everything is out of stock. it all sold out weeks ago. there won't be shit at the gun show except disappointed rednecks and overpriced junk.

Yeah, just get your permit, go to a gun store in a few months once some of the insane demand has died down but before it ramps up when the actual congressional debate starts (seriously, the debt ceiling and sequester debate is going to eat up all of the spring) and order what you want. You might have to wait a little while, but you'll get what you want without dealing with a crowd and getting gouged.

gotcha on the registration, you guys are a great wealth of information... and you somehow do it without being a prick ( )

anyway, I have a concealed carry from VA that hasn't expired yet. I read here:

http://www.ncrpa.org/ncgunfaq.htm

that if you have a concealed carry you don't need a pistol permit and i am aware that the va concealed carry reciprocates in NC. however, being that i am no longer a resident of VA I suppose that negates my concealed carry status. correct?

You can get around it if you have something else with your new address. I'd updated my CHP but not my license the last time that I bought a pistol. They checked with the ATF and I was able to use my vehicle registration as proof instead of the outdated license.

yes, i know, but putting an address you don't live at on the Form 4473 is a big no-no

that wasn't your case, but this guy is saying he resides in NC now, but has a VA CHP

Get a new CCW in NC. That is, unless you want to carry illegally.

Just a heads up, I had a buddy try to get a pistol purchase permit on Friday. Office said it would be the first week of February before he received his paperwork.

Just learned a bit about VA law:
Quote :
"PURCHASE AND POSSESSION

No state permit is required to otherwise purchase or possess a rifle, shotgun or handgun. Virginia residents may purchase firearms from any licensed Federal Firearms Licensee, even if they are out of state."

from http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-laws/virginia.aspx

also, Virginia does not require you to relinquish your permit if you move out of state. With a valid photo ID from another state, the permit simply acts as a non-resident permit but remains valid until expiration.

interesting

at this point, you're probably better off to just take the class and apply for your CHP. you never need another $5 jim crow permission of the sheriff, you're protected from charges of concealing a weapon if you and an officer have different opinions of what "concealed" are, and, most importantly, the sheriff is required by law to issue your permit in 90 days unless he finds a reason to deny it. that's not the case for the jim crow leftover-from-1919 HPP.

I wouldn't carry in another state, but that's on you. If you get pulled with a gun in a car registered in NC but your CCW is from VA, might be a tough discussion. Either way, as long as you disclose to the officer that you have a gun in the car (as required to have a CCW), then you should be fine. Cops typically have no issues with legal carriers.

That being said, are you planning to stay in NC? If so, go ahead and get your CCW here and save yourself the headache. It comes along with an unlimited purchase license, which pretty much negates your previous issue in this thread.

I honestly wouldn't go. It is usually retarded crowded, and I can only imagine what it would be like with the current issues going on, and especially after PBO made his announcement today.

I wish I could get a good tax refund in before any ban took place. I think that would be nice irony buying an AR-15 with my tax refund.

You used to be able to get good deals there, but not in the last several years. The last time I went to a gun show in Raleigh, Wilmington, or Fayetteville it was more flea market type stuff than anything else. I imagine it will be packed and the prices will be high.

there is no paper trail. that's the whole point of the way NC does the permit system.

and yeah, there's a gun show in my town in FL next weekend, but I figure that it's a total waste of time.

So when you purchase a pistol in NC, and you give up your permit and fill out the paperwork, what does all that signify, if not a paper trail?

I thought the ATF controlled out of state handgun purchases, not state law (e.g. must transfer to FFL in your home state for handgun purchases)?

The 4473 stays at the FFL as records that he sold it. Private sales are not recorded anywhere.
There is no library of these forms, and working backward from manufacturer to distributor to buyer and on is not easy or fast.
