I live over off Tryon between Lake Wheeler and 70. My Gf and I decided to make a trip to the liquor store for some 'shine before everything shut down, and headed toward the one in Cary at Tryon/Cary Pkwy. Traffic. Is. Fucked. Took us almost 45 minutes to make what is at most a 10 minute drive in moderate traffic. Wrecks and fender benders all over the place. Noticed that eastbound traffic on Tryon was a parking lot the whole way there, so decided to take the back roads on the way back to save time. Took Cary Pkwy to Holly Springs Rd. to Penny Rd. to Lake Wheeler to Tryon. Traffic on the back roads was much better but it was slow going, those roads were pure ice; we were in my gf's Subaru and even crawling with the AWD the drive was pretty sketchy. Penny Rd. was a mess, a couple places cars couldn't even make it up a shallow grade and traffic was backed up in the opposite direction. We came to one bend and some guy's 4x4 had obviously just spun into a ditch; as we were approaching I thought the bend looked clear of ice and was mentally deriding him for driving like an asshole...until I hit what looked even to my trained eye to be good asphalt and the Subaru damn near got sideways. Crazy out there y'all

tl;dr: the roads are deceptively bad and people suck so be careful

I drove Tryon from Avent Ferry to Cary Parkway at 1:50pm and didn't see anything notable

except for a SUV on its side on the sidewalk

It took me about 5 minutes to travel that stretch
