for directing me to the best laptop you can find for under $250 on http://raleigh.craigslist.org or elsewhere if you happen to have that inside track
$5 will be delivered (or mailed if out of town) if I buy your selection. I intend to buy tomorrow or this weekend. My Dell Latitude D630 is shitting the bed mechanically (screen hinge busting itself up, its days are limited) and I want the best business-class replacement I can get. Just need this to make it for a few months until I actually have the time and cash to build a proper, modern piece.
The purpose here is bringing someone in that actually knows what they're looking at, I've been out of the laptop game for quite a while so I really have no idea what's trash and what isn't in the rough 2006-2010 models that are in this price bracket. Right now I'm leaning toward a Dell Latitude E6500. Also open to the best deal you can find on the best D630 you can find, as it would be nice to be able to use all the equipment I already have for it. Generally I don't want anything to do with Gateway, Compaq, etc. Think Dell, IBM, Lenovo. No frills, no bullshit, just a quality machine.
Must: - be refurbished or at least in great condition and reformatted by someone competent. or come with the disks so I can do it myself. this is generally evident from the presentation of the ad - have MS Office suite - have business-class OS, preferably Win7 Business or Ultimate. - be mid-to-large size. no compacts or netbooks or monstrous media laptops or any of that jive. I spend much of my working life on my laptop and I don't want to get cross-eyed and hunch-backed. - have good battery and power adapter (unless it's a D630 b/c I have all that. but, chances are if that stuff is missing or worn out it's probably not in good shape.)
GODSPEED!

just got to compusa/tigerdirect, get a re-furb, and use the money you save either on a warranty (for personal satisfaction) or a bag of sex toys (again, for personal satisfaction) 1/18/2013 1:52:33 AM

Ended up buying the one I picked, sincere thanks to those that offered help though!
This E6500 is pretty damn sweet, even for a 4yo used model. Looks, feels, behaves as new.
And, for the record, I'm just as impressed with the folks I bought it from. Responded to a CL ad that was listed by Strategic Initiatives, Inc. They had a nice selection of quality laptops at OTD prices half of what they're listing for on Ebay. This machine came with Win8 on it, I called and told him I wanted Win7 Ultimate, and by the time I got there he had it reformatted with MS Office already on it. Nice people, great CS, do recommend if you're looking for a solid laptop on the cheap.

Lol they gave you a 250 dollar laptop with win7 ultimate and ms office? I doubt they would want that spread around anyway. 1/19/2013 1:17:00 PM

(I paid less than that) and yeah I have no idea how all that works so I can't speak to its legal legitimacy. From my POV though it was a great experience. I did ask if I could have a copy of win7/office for when I reformatted down the road and he told me it wasn't legal to give it out with their corporate license...could be lip service but I don't care 1/19/2013 2:01:54 PM
