Trying to settle the debate. I'm not going to bias opinion.

This slab of granite, turned into a countertop would be:

1) awesome

2) nice

3) whatever

4) meh

5) ugly as hell

6) other (please specify)

Depends on the space. I don't love it for a large counter, but to be honest it is hard to make a call about counter material and color without knowing all the details of the surrounding space.

5. Reddish/rust color just doesn't appeal to me at all for a countertop.

It's a kitchen remodel with a huge center island, then a sink and counter on one side and the oven/microwave/fridge and a counter on the opposite side as well.

A small bathroom counter with a sink that complemented the red would be nice.

For a large counter in a kitchen it'd be wrong, as the red isn't uniform enough to look like anything other than a stain/mildew.

I wouldn't mind that granite for an island in a rustic looking mountain vacation home

This is a 20 year old suburban home going through a kitchen remodel.

Still very hard to make a call without knowing wall color, cabinet style, cabinet color, floor type/color, appliances etc.

However, unless they are going for something more rustic, that just seems busy for a counter imo. And, if you're into trends (not that I recommend letting trends lead you too much because that can certainly be a pitfall too), that really busy granite has waned dramatically in popularity in remodels lately.

If they are going for something rustic, that could potentially work depending on the rest of the decor. It also comes down to what they personally like and are willing to pay for though. For some people, they just don't have the vision themselves but once someone else picks out something that works really well in their space they can appreciate it and love it. Other people know what they like, and although it may not be the most attractive choice overall, will be much happier going with what they like even if it may not be the best aesthetic choice.

Alright, well it's for my parents, and my dad and I think it's atrocious. I liken it so a 20-something year old tattoo artist getting it in their all-black kitchen with flames all over the walls. My parents are not young, and I'm trying to convince my mother that some salesman just secured himself granite salesman of the year by getting this slab off their lot. The house is neither new nor old. I have no idea what the walls are gonna look like, other than having some cabinets hanging around the (stainless steel) appliances. The new cabinets and other wood is all stained more of a reddish/mahogany color as opposed to the yellow/orange-ish hardwood floors. It's not a rustic home. Just a 20 year old suburban brick house.

to me, all signs point to it looking pretty fugly in the space. It actually looks surprisingly similar to a granite slab my parents just put in their little retirement home (and I tried to convince them against getting it as well)

once its polished it could work

if the cabs have a mahogany color then the reddish color on that slab might look nice. is there any gold or yellow running through the granite?

I like it but I have a geology background... It would probably hurt resale value of a house due to it's boldness... harder to appease potential buyers with something super specific to the current owner's tastes (or the tastes of their wife). A lot better to go with a pretty yet neutral (bland?) countertop.

^^^^exactly. I've been trying to say it looks like someone broke the damn thing, epoxied the whole thing back together, and decided to label it as "unique". I think it's an eyesore, not to mention it'll probably get cut in a way that the stupid lightning bolt will be on every damn counter top in the room, just making it look like some random stain or mold or some stupid shit like that.

^^no. And they're only redoing the kitchen, which is attached to the living room, which still has the old, yellow cabinets. Everything is all messed up.

What color are the cabinets?

What color is the floor?

Are you doing a tile backsplash?

etc.

I would really need to see how they plan on cutting that. Its either a little ugly or really fucking ugly depending on how they lay it out.

This is the only shitty photo I can get for now, which probably doesn't help, but at least gives you an idea for the new wood (maybe better described as cedar color as opposed to mahogany) with the old floors (yellow looking bleh gymnasium floor, which are going to be re-done anyway...but I don't know if that means re-stained).

I love your new island. That being said, that granite is going to look heinous on it.

Too much red.. you need some contrast. I'll post some examples after some google image-searching

I already did the google image tour of 'classy' granite. It's hard to even find a slab of granite that fugly on there (though I did see one that managed to give the appearance of water stains along the edges).

^^Oh, I have. Those fucking metal bows have been the cause of me yelling "FUCK" in front of my parents more than the cumulative total of all other f-bombs I've dropped in front of my parents in my whole life. Shit is sharp, ugly, and hangs too cot damn low.

don't like it with that kitchen you showed.

And it's hard to know how that streak in the middle of the slab would turn out; could be very odd looking. But still, I don't think it matches the kitchen.

She's just calling me an asshole now and completely ignoring me. I might just have to sit back and wait to tell her, "I told you so." But she's stubborn enough to talk about how much she loves it just because she knows everyone else hates it.

Wow. Thanks for the photoshop. I thought I'd leave the comment that followed to kind of beat the point in, but she just got into the whole, "no, there's gonna be a stove top here, a prep sink here" kinda shit.

I'm doing my best to warn my father what a terrible idea this is, since he's the only one with the power to stop this. I'll be talking it over dinner with him tonight.

"There is no ground rule while you choose your countertop, but it might help to ask a few questions prior to making a selection.
1. How big is the kitchen?
Dark colored countertops make the area look even smaller.
2. What is the color of the kitchen cabinets?
Countertops in contrast to the cabinets complement the kitchen.

3. How much natural light does the kitchen get?
4. What’s the color of the kitchen walls?
5. What’s the kitchen flooring like?
6. Does the granite countertop complement the kitchen’s hardware?
7. If you want to sell the home, will the color of the countertops be something that everyone would prefer?"

^^because when my parents are spending a couple thousand dollars on fucking rocks, I want to make sure some salesman isn't raping them and laughing about it. When I said my parents aren't young...I was trying to be gentle about it. My parents are old. Like getting to that point where I'm worried about them falling for Nigerian email scams old.

Color sort of clashes with the wood.

And i'd be concerned about excessive pitting and chipping with that texture...
