Blackberry (formerly RIM) is launching BlackBerry 10 and their new phones today. As someone who was excited about WP8 but was left disappointed with the result, the z10 with BB10 looks really nice. The launch event is going on now:

I like it so far

Even though I am not into using it personally, but the Story Maker is pretty awesome for Social Media fiends.

WP8 users are going to be so mad that the BB store will have next day tv shows and same-day-as-dvd movies to download (WP8 store doesn't have videos).

Yeah I am pretty pissed that they will have have more day one options and will grow faster than WP8. I have not got my WP8 yet, I might just get a BlackBerry! Kidding, but man WP8 REALLY needs dev support.

haha, coworker who got a WP8 phone and complains about it daily just said he is buying the z10 even though he has to pay full retail.

the 8 app limit for the homescreen is annoying, that might be the deal-breaker for me. they should allow you to at least make some of those things permanent.

doesn't appear to have the same functionality as old bes and doesn't come with a physical keyboard, which is what keeps old bad devices in peoples' hands

one of the devices has a physical keyboard, the z10 does not

also, very few people want physical keyboards now

I hope they make one that doesn't have a camera on it. I personally know some people that have jobs were cameras are not allowed on site no even in your vehicle.

honestly, this is what i've relegated BB to in my mind already

i don't know anyone who would willingly buy a blackberry (though obviously the Z10 is aimed to change that), but it has always seemed to me (without any direct experience, i admit) that BB is well suited to corporate/enterprise and government use

by design, android (currently) isn't acceptable if an employer wants to lock down the phones...create a Z10c or Z11 or something that lacks the camera and you'd have a nice phone for corporate/enterprise/government use

I really like the idea of having two completely separate profiles to keep work and personal separate, they can lock down, wipe, clear whatever to the corporate side and you can keep your personal info entirely separate.

I mean, it would pretty much take a Blackberry that can suck your dick for it to gain back any the market share its lost to Android/iphone over the past 5 years. Am I correct?

is this something the BB software can do? android 4.2 (well, 4.1, technically) allows for profiles, now, but obviously android isn't suitable for an environment where REAL control is necessary

this is already possible on both iOS and Android - iOS since 4.x and Android since 2.2

source? i was under the impression that user profiles was a new feature in 4.1 (and only really usable in 4.2)

i don't know anything about iOS...but then, most companies or the government aren't going to purchase iphones (not saying companies have not or will not, just that most will not for the obvious reasons)

it's hard to guess what the public 'wants' but the market says that the public doesn't care enough about a physical keyboard

i work for a leading MDM company - we have been doing it for a while

there is a difference in that iOS built the profile system in to the OS a long time ago and Android it's fairly recently bolted it on - but it's been possible for a long time now especially when you count for what's possible via SAFE and every other manufacturer's MDM version

i think people convince themselves they dont want a physical keyboard because the latest and greatest androids and iphones dont have them, but they have better hardware specs, graphics, etc

sure a physical keyboard is no big deal for unlocking your pin or typing in a url or sending a text, but its a pain in the ass to send an email longer than 2 sentences

my droid has a slideout keyboard...i dont use it all the time, but its very very handy when i do need to use it

i just want to make sure i understand...you're not actually saying the android OS has included user profile switching natively (until JB)...right?

i'm aware that you can do many things outside of vanilla AOSP...i certainly didn't mean to imply that you can't do anything except what google tells you can do

Correct - but segregation of corporate vs personal has been possible without having distinct profiles built in to the OS

gotcha

i never claimed to be an android expert (because i'm FAR from it)...but i've spent enough time in the ROM community that i would have been surprised to find out that user profiles had been built in since froyo

I wouldn't have minded trying out the new blackberry, but my company is replacing all blackberrys with iphones and I would never buy a blackberry for personal use.

Also, has anyone used the Good app for work?

after spending the past year with my playbook that i got for a $teal i'm routing for bb. i found it hard to go back to my android device after using such an intuitive interface. if BB steps their app game up they might have a chance. as consumers we should all be pushing for any competition especially when your choices have basically eroded down to galaxy or iphone .

except that that's not true at all...i realize you're saying that samsung and apple phones are the only devices worth having, but that's incredibly subjective and the fact that HTC, motorola, and LG still make android phones (that are purchased by consumers) indicates that folks still have choices

and then you've got the windows phones (is it just nokia and HTC right now? i don't keep up)

competition is great...and as long as you're happy with what you have, that's all that matters...but blackberry holds exactly zero interest for me...it doesn't provide any benefits over an android device (for my purposes) and the rootability/customization of android devices are very specifically a draw for a lot of people

And don't you have to pay for RIM expensive data plan to use the BlackBerry servers or am I blowing hot air?

AT&T typical requires an enterprise data plan for corporate phones which I would think is pointless and just a reason for AT&T to overcharge businesses.

no need to make a new thread:

anybody with a blackberry know how to get the gmail app? I had it for my first few months, but over the weekend, it stopped working. Tried to find it on the app store, but apparently it no longer exists and a google search says blackberry no longer supports gmail

i had one of the new z10s through work for about 24 hours. it was dogshit. it was an improvement over every other blackberry device but outside of that universe, its still lagging significantly. i returned it to our IT guys less than 24 hours after i got it.

i, too, disagree. while not the market avg. everyone i know with an older BB says the keyboard is THE reason why they still have it and wont make the move to another device.

right, and you guys are not many people. even if every single BB owner wanted a physical keyboard (which is a big overestimate), that's just a few percent of cell phone users. The majority of users prefer screen space to keyboard.

once you split the screen between content and onscreen keyboard you're typically left with less overall screen real estate. which is why i prefer sliders

Yes, but the onscreen keyboard isn't always on the screen.

Look, guys, I understand your points and preferences about physical keyboards, they make sense. I'm just pointing out that you guys represent a tiny percent of the market.
