"VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI has announced that he will resign Feb. 28, the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March.

The 85-year-old pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals Monday morning.

He said that because of his advanced age and diminishing strength, he didn't feel he could carry on the job.

do they post an opening online for this sort of thing?

Isn't he still like 40 years younger than the last Pope who held on to that papacy until his dying breath?

But... he is probably pulling a Pete Carroll and getting the fuck out before shit hits the fan. He has a guilty conscience over being in the know for EVERY SINGLE molestation case over the last 50 years that crossed his desk as a Cardinal. And the fact that Catholics have been turning away from the church in record numbers under his reign as Pope.

It's probably even easier for the higher-ups to get access and get away with it with all the pleebs covering everything up for them.

If Barack Obama desired to stick his penis in a 9 year old boy's ass, he could do so by lunch and no one would ever know about it. Those are the perks...

Actually he's about a year older than John Paul II was at his death.

A friend of mine who is a Catholic priest in Rome received this email from the Pope today

Quote :
"From the Holy Father:

Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

BENEDICTUS PP XVI"

I don't understand half of it, but it's straight from the source

If I declared myself pope on March 1 how long would it take for the church to recognize me as an official anti-pope?

^^They posted an image with tournament-brackets for the likely successors to the Pope; they had "the old-ass news" of his resignation back when it was new.

Also, just FYI: The announcement said he would retire at "20:00 hours" which means 2PM EST, or just under 3 hours; it turns out that's when his normal workday ends.
