anyone use a memory foam or fiber/featherbed mattress topper?

i have a really nice mattress and keep a basic mattress pad on it. But i'm thinking about adding an extra layer of comfort with a fiber/feather bed topper or something similar. thoughts?

the fiber bed toppers are supposed to be cooler than traditional down feather, which is what i'm leaning towards. but then there are the zoned memory foam toppers that a lot of people use as well.

I got a 3" memory foam mattress topper for my bed, but it was overkill. It made the bed too soft to sleep on comfortably.

If you prefer a softer place to sleep in place of a firm mattress i'd say they're worth it though

[Edited on February 15, 2013 at 10:38 AM. Reason : also of note, target does 90 day return on these. so you can try it out and return if you don't like]

When I was using a full bed I had a down alternative mattress topper that was heavenly.

I prefer an in the middle mattress with a fluffy topper.

yeah, 3" memory foam is definitely overkill for me. I already have a deep mattress as is, with pillow top. So i'd like for my sheets to still fit over it.

it is gross, but if the store offers that kind of policy i don't see why you can't take advantage of it. i bought a new pillow at BBB and was told I could bring it back in a month if i didn't like it.

^^yeah i bought a Wamsutta DreamZone for side sleepers. not sure if it'll hold up or not.

this can get into a pillow discussion too, because i'm trying to find a good one but wasn't ready to spend the money on a tempur-pedic

box wasn't too big, it was vacuum sealed, when you open it you have to let it expand and air out for about a day

shit's heavy though

as far as pillows, this was on sale for 33 the other day, excellent and its nice to never have to flip the pillow (stays cool as promised)

the queen came in a cubeish box, but no handle holes, so I basically had to "roll" it upstairs, then cut the seal and flip the box to slide it out, then it expanded in my office. it got even heavier once it expanded, and I dragged it to the master bedroom. I'm a fairly strong guy, and it can be done with 1 person, but it would have been way easier with 2. I imagine you'd want 2 for a cali king

the platform bed frame I ordered for it came today, ive got to lug that 150 pound behemoth upstairs by myself. not looking forward to that

the "ess" in "matress" and the "top" in "toppers" sort of combined in my head to form the word "topless"

so I clicked this thread, half-consciously thinking that it would be worth clicking, before I had really digested the thread-title

Had a feather topper that would stick me with feathers. Had to use 2 sheets to decrease sharp ends sticking through.

My wife bought an expensive memory foam topper when she moved in with me way back when and I thought she was totally wasting money.

A few months ago we got a puppy, and one day he ran into our bedroom, jumped on the bed, and pissed ALLLLLLLLL over it. Seeing as the the topper is basically a big sponge, we threw that shit out.

I couldn't sleep after that. Like, at all. The bed was so hard! So I went out and got a new mattress topper, too, like a sucker.

That's the whole story.

I need a new pillow something awful. Husband bought me a tempurpedic one when I moved in, but I completely crush it in a couple of hours, maybe because I get so hot. I'm back to using my old queen sized over stuffed pillow, but I still end up with my head on the mattress or Inspector Bear halfway through the night.

my side sleeper pillow is getting returned. more neck pain in 4 nights with that thing than any time prior. not really sure what the cause is. it's very plush, but i think it may actually be too firm. couldn't get comfortable using two pillows and not enough support with just the one. may need something a little more low profile. or i may try the Iso-Cool pillow linked above.
