My neighborhood has a message board and the HOA members are thinking about switching all user names to the users real first and last names. The problem is, when signing up for the message board it was stated in writing that the first and last names would remain private, and were ONLY used to verify we actually live in the neighborhood (it's a big neighborhood).

Has anyone had experience with a similar situation? I have a major problem with information that was provided with a privacy guarantee to be suddenly made public.

There's probably a thing that says "terms and conditions are subject to change."

Maybe a good compromise is first name and last initial.

If you don't directly involve yourself in the running of the HOA you live under you had best be prepared to deal with their shit. HOAs can ruin your life and the only way to be sure they don't is to be the one who runs things.

I would make the argument then, that IF they want to make usernames the real names of the users, the entire messageboard must be made private, member-only accessible.

So if you want to see anyone's names, you must sign up and be a verified member of the HOA.

That would keep the privacy of the members to the membership base, and keep transparency of who each user is.

^that sounds reasonable. I'll suggest something similar.

yeah... i'm going to speak with the guy in charge of the ad hoc committee set up for this topic. (yeah) and see if I can help figure out a compromise.

when i was running my HOA, i WISH i could get them to use a messageboard. i couldn't even get 10% of them to register on the website to see their account balance or download architectural change request forms.
