I was browsing around and happened to see a page talking about Key Haven. Anyone ever been out there before? Is it worth the drive/ $35 key charge? I know its primitive, but how are the facilities that are there? Seems like it could be a good place to go camping, and its nice it has a boat ramp.
From the website: http://www.tx.ncsu.edu/organizations/keyhaven/
Quote : | " Key Haven is a large wooded site on a peninsula at Kerr Lake. It is available for camping, picnicking, boating, enjoying nature and privacy. It is leased from the Army Corps of Engineers by NCSU to be used by it's faculty, staff, graduate students, and their guests. It has two picnic shelters, picnic tables, tent pads, sandy beaches, a boat ramp, privies and a locked gate. There is no drinking water and no electricity. Drinking water must be brought in. Use this facility at your own risk. Pick up litter, and burn or pack out all trash when you leave. Please keep the gate locked. Enjoy!" |

I heard good things from a guy I used to work with that took his kids up there once or twice a year. I remember him saying it was clean, relatively quiet, and his kids always had fun. 2/28/2013 3:04:25 PM |

Didn't know that NCSU and UNC both have 40-acre primitive campsites at Kerr Lake. Unfortunately it would cost me $150/year for myself and additional $60/year for my family instead of $30 for a key. Also its like a mile from the VA border, so its another 20 minutes of driving. It does have a daily use fee instead of a permit, but that still comes out to $20/day. Might try going out there sometime this year. 2/28/2013 3:43:55 PM |

When they say boating, would that include a jet ski? 2/28/2013 5:25:50 PM |

im sure it would. It doesnt say anything about limitations on what you can put in, and Jet-skis are allowed at Kerr Lake, so you should be good to go. 2/28/2013 5:58:50 PM |

wow, I grew up camping at Nutbush and drove by that place on the boat a thousand times. Never knew what it was. It is a relatively small peninsula. 3/1/2013 1:52:51 PM |
