If you heard this, what would you think?

Would you not infer that the author was referring to population?

I would also remind them that largest doesn't necessarily mean most populous.

I would infer population if we were talking about largest cities, but not for states and countries.

Don't know why I think like that.

Texas is bigger geographically than California. Then Alaska came along. Texas protested, they didn't like being number 2. Alaska offered to split into two states so Texas could be number 3. Lesson: Alaska is fucking huge.

Sure it does. Which state contains the most cubic feet of land mass, if counted up from sea level?

LOL, it's still not even close. Besides Alaska dwarfing the shit out of Colorado Alaska has lots of mountains as well, including the tallest mountain in North America, in case anyone forgot. Also, don't forget that fully half of CO (including Denver) isn't even in the mountains. It's just flat as shit land that looks like Kansas.

^^still flat!

Average altitude in Alaska: 1900 ft
Average altitude in Colorado: 6800 ft (quite impressive actually). Still not enough to offset the massive size of Alaska though.

1900ft/5280ft = 0.36 miles x 663,268 sq miles = 238,676 cubic miles for Alaska
6800ft/5280ft = 1.29 miles x 104,094 sq miles = 134,060 cubic miles for Colorado

Definitely an interesting comparison to say the least.

[Edited on March 8, 2013 at 9:54 AM. Reason : ^I dunno why that graphic says 586,400 sq miles for Alaska. I used Wiki's figures]

So in other words I was totally right.

Alaska is still the largest but Colorado is definitely "up there"

largest, in terms of population maybe, but the correct term is 'most populous'. It's approaching 40 million people.

it is still a pretty fucking huge state though. The drive from San Diego to Crescent City along coastal CA 1/Hwy 101 takes about 20 hours and is around 1000 miles.Interestingly enough, no matter where you are in CA, you're never more than 4-5 hours from either the ocean or a mountain range.

And in terms of geographic/climate diversity/variety, no state other than Alaska or Hawaii even comes close to offering what CA has.
