Airing April 15th.

Quote :
"In the year 2046, it’s a new Earth – with new rules. Over thirty years after various alien races arrived on Earth, the landscape is completely altered, terraformed nearly beyond recognition. To the town of Defiance, on what used to be St. Louis, comes the mysterious Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his charge, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas). As they settle into town – overseen by the mayor, Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) and filled with residents like the powerful Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene), enterprising lounge owner Kenya (Mia Kirshner) and the ambitious, alien Tarrs (Tony Curran and Jaime Murray) - events begin to unfold that threaten the fragile peace this border town has fought for.

As the events of Defiance unfold weekly on your TV screen, you can see how the residents’ struggles impact the game of Defiance, a high-octane, multi-platform experience from Trion Worlds!

Defiance, from the minds behind Battlestar Galactica and Farscape, debuts on Syfy on April 15 at 9/8c."

Looks like a show that I'd get into.

Did anybody else watch the pilot last night? Its on Hulu if you want to catch it too. I thought it was pretty good. Some of it was quite predictable and cheesy, but there was a lot to enjoy. I have been reading the background information of the different alien races and it looks like it could be very interesting. Hoping that SyFy gives it some time to grow and develop out its story.

I enjoyed it. It's not the most brilliant piece of writing, but it was entertaining and scratched the itch. Plan to watch the next episode.

^^Yea, its not anything remarkable, yet. But after SyFy cancelled every other damn science-fiction show they had aside from Warehouse 13, I was actually surprised to see this come up. Also interested to read that David J. Peterson, who was the linguist in charge of developing the Dothraki language for Game of Thrones also developed full languages for 2 of the alien races, the Castithans and the Irathients and has currently sketched out the languages for the Indogenes and the Liberata.

Just watched my recording. I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely a little contrived with some of the dialogue, but I can overlook that in a pilot. I'm interested to learn more about the 30 year history between then and now. As long as they keep building off the quality of the premiere I could see myself getting pretty into this show.

Yea, I am wondering how this is going to progress with the MMORPG based in the universe that actually came out first, if there will be any correlation at all in new locations unlocked, new events happening, etc.

Not sure if I want to watch this based on past SyFy shows; Farscape, Alphas, Sanctuary, SGU, Eureka, First Wave, The Invisible Man, Lexx, and Seven Days. Chances are there's more that I've forgotten, but that's a lot of shows to watch and have the channel end them prematurely with either no closure or a rushed finish.

Kinda at that point where I dread anything exciting that gets announced on the channel because I know there's a strong possibility that show could end up like the others.

^I know what you mean, to an extent. I watched several of the shows you listed and while I was upset that they got canned, at least we got to watch them when we did. Out of all of those I was maddest about

Eureka: They had 5 seasons. That ain't bad. I still thought it was going strong, but it was no Firefly 1 season and gone kinda thing like FOX pulled.

Sanctuary: It got 4 seasons, but I did hate the shitty way they kinda just made it disappear. At least Eureka was given an additional episode and a little advanced notice that they were done so they could have a wrap up episode. BTW, does anybody else think that Kenya Rosewater at certain angles looks a LOT like Helen Magnus did on Sanctuary? She obviously does not sound or act like her, but a couple of times during the episode I thought she reminded me of somebody, and when she was holding the gun during the battle in the dark, I totally thought she looked like Helen Magnus.

Farscape: Got 5 seasons. I never watched it (though I definitely plan to) and I hear it has a cliffhanger ending that never gets resolved. Boo on that. Give the crew a chance to tie everything up, don't just leave them and the fans hanging.

Alphas: Only 2 seasons this time and another cliffhanger ending. I watched and liked this, but was not in love with it. The series ending was shit though.

SGU: Really WTF kinda ending on that too. I was a huge SG1/SGA fan, so I also don't understand the backlash from other fans of that universe. OMFG it was different. So? I thought it was a great new take on the formulaic shit happens, send a team through the Stargate, more shit happens, expendable people die, we back home, the end.

I did not see the others, so I can't comment on them. Since this is one of the few science-fiction dramas currently on the SyFy channel, I hope they don't see ratings slip a bit while its more expensive to produce than another shitty "reality" running in the dark show like Ghost Hunters and shit can it for more reality shit. Reality TV has been the bane of much of TV, but especially harmful to a channel like SyFy.

i assume we're talking about a different "seven days," since the only TV series i'm aware of by that name was made by and aired on UPN...and was pretty good

^^^Sorry as I said, I don't know about Farscape because I have not watched it. Part of the reason I have not picked it up was that I didn't want to get invested in it only to have to deal with a shit cliffhanger ending. Now I am a lot more interested. Thanks!

I can see that given how they've set up Nolan as the new lawman, but given the larger story arcs that they've laid the groundwork for, I think it'll have a bit more richness than your typical Law & Order. If you really want to learn more about the universe, Wiki has a good write up on the broader history, but I suppose it's a bit spoiler-ish assuming they were going to gradually roll it out in the season. Thought the premise was really interesting though.

Well, at least in this one they had him prove himself three times before they handed the badge over to him. Defused a violent situation, solved a crime and helped defend the town from attack. He's not a cop in this case, a bounty hunter/tracker/ex-marine. Yeah, guess it's about the same though from what you described (never saw Terra Nova).

Completely missed it being on UPN. I just remember it from SciFi.

Seven Days was a good show, just canceled without a resolution. Much like the others shows I've enjoyed that have been on SciFi..lol

Farscape was a great show. The Peacekeeper Wars thankfully happened. It was rushed, but helped bring some closure to the series.

Watched the 3rd episode last night. Interesting cover at the end. Never heard of Civil Twilight, but it looks like they have had music show up on a lot of TV shows.

One problem I had with this episode was the land and terraforming issue. I understand that the terraformers caused cataclysmic changes, but it is interesting that a majority of the city got buried deep underground and somewhat intact, while the Arch is still above ground and almost totally intact. The only thing I can figure is maybe the Arch was buried and they tore it down and rebuilt it above ground. Nitpicking shit, I know.

Also, I did not realize that Stahma Tarr was Jaime Murray, who also played HG Wells on Warehouse 13. She was not quite as revealing on W13 as she is on here.

I, too, thought that cover was interesting. I kind of liked it, definitely set the tone for the last scene(s).

I think the arch somehow survived the Terraforming. Pretty sure I remember Julie Benz saying in the first episode something about how it stood defiant as the world around it changed. Not very plausible, but it's a SyFy show so I can look past it.

Quality second episode, the dialogue seemed a lot less contrived and I'm enjoying learning more about the backstory of the other races and some more about what has happened during the 30ish years since first contacts. Cool scene in old St Louis with Nolan and the old guy (McGriff?).

Hopefully this show gets a fair shot, I could see it being pretty quality.

Yea like I said, nitpicking shit on that. It is not detracting from the show for me, but I was wondering how that would work.

Also yes, I kinda enjoyed the cover. Like you said, it fit the scene quite well. I had never heard of the band before, but neat cover. Totally different direction.

Thoughts on last night? Debating whether the quick death of the two antagonists this episodes was showing just how cheap life was now or expedient to avoid a big action sequence.

More character development on the Rosewater sisters. Some of the shots were neat, and learning about the gun and drug trade was pretty cool. Not an extremely great episode, but good enough. And honestly, I kinda appreciated the rapid resolution there. Getting nicked in a major artery by a glass shard and a half dozen rounds in the back does have a profound effect on life expectancy in the real world, so I'll go along with it.

I'm still onboard with this show.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the BioMan again though...I'm thinking he's a construct of some sort and can likely be repaired.

Obvious drama forthcoming between the sisters for Nolan...unless the younger one dies at some point, which I can see happening.

I enjoyed the political aspects of this episode with Daytak (sp?) getting onto the town council.

Interested to see what's going on in the mining cave with the McCaulys...probably has something to do with what the old mayor is looking to get at.

In retrospect a lot went on in that episode even though it felt a little slow. Good set ups throughout.

Last nights episode was good, if a bit strange. The whole religion thing with Irisa was really weird. And same for the Ambassador. Not a bad episode, I enjoyed it and it did give us more background into Irisa's backstory.

Also apparently the prisoner Rynn, her character was added to the game last night and bringing new Hellbugs or something. Glad to see they are trying to find a way to tie in the TV show and the game a bit as the TV show develops.

slight problem here... They've got all this advanced alien tech all over the place, but can't seem to get a reliable power distribution system going in the town or to build better dwellings than basic shacks for most people? Hell, the old nuke plant still works, for fuck's sake

^^ It's clear that there are nicer buildings there (just amongst the elites), so one could argue that it's just a small community scraping by. As for the technology disparity, it makes sense in that you've got bits and pieces of all this advance technology splayed around but not enough concentrated of the right stuff to upgrade a small, independent city-state.

As for the latest episode, kinda interesting in that they're starting to play more to the broader global politics. Story was meh, but I'm glad it wasn't a straight forward martyrdom or something silly like that. Previews for the next few episodes are interesting enough that I'll follow through to the end of this season at least.
