the power bill, upkeep and maintenance on a hot tub are expensive.

go on a cruise. better yet go on a European cruise.

Hot tubs are ultimately a huge waste of money unless you're an obsessed soaker.

And if you're doing a vacation, don't take a cruise. Go to Europe or something on your own accord, especially if you haven't seen much.

I know we would get a lot of use out of the hot tub.

I also know we would have a great time using it for vacation. Sigh.

Sheeit I could do a badass 3 week European vacation for two for 2k
you gotta cut out on your own and take some risks - do the planning for yourself and visit countries that aren't on the list of European vacation destinations

I vote you go to Prague, Budapest and then down to Split in Croatia for some beautiful beaches

If by beautiful beaches, you mean rocky sand and concrete...then yes, they have beautiful beaches.

Split is still cool...but you don't go for the beaches.

Take a vacation. You can do some amazing vacations for half of what you are looking to blow. And hot tubs are overrated as far as owning one. Everyone thinks they are going to use it all the time before they buy one.

I always prefer to spend money on experiences rather than things. Think about this, when you look back at your life in 20 or so years, are you going to say "Remember that time we went to Europe?" or "Remember that time we sat in a hot tub?"

However, my vote changes if the hot tub is actually a time machine.

i don't think i'd consider a cruise to be the same as "out of country vacation"

save it for a "real" out-of-country vacation or buy a hot tub...though i'd go with the former, without a second thought, because hot tubs are a PITA and expensive to maintain

+1

Aka make it a real trip, and not a freaking cruise. I'm not opposed to cruising on the cheap, but for that kind of money you can go on an awesome trip.

On the hot tubs side, don't spend $5k on one. That would be a huge waste of money as they depreciate like crazy. Just watch Craigslist for a few months and one will probably pop up. And stick to the major brands like Jacuzzi and Sundance as that will help out with reliability and cheaper overhead (eg they usually have more insulation). I got a 3 year old Jacuzzi tub for $1500 while the new ones of the same model were going for $6k.

Cruises are whack as fuck.

Do some research on how much electricity hot tubs use and then make the call.

...

I mean "Why go on a cruise?"
so you can gorge yourself on shrimp salad and margaritas?
so you can "see" the Caribbean without looking at black people?
so you can spend a few days pissing out of your butt thanks to norovirus?

so you can jump off a sinking ship?
so you can sit on deck of a dead ship looking for places to poop?
so you can catch a ride home on a tanker passing by your disabled ship?

^^^agreed. Hot tubs are like pool tables. Everyone wants one, but then they dont get used much and are a bitch to sell so they usually go for a lot less. I would recommend finding a good used one on Craigslist and then going on vacation.

Here's how I manage:

Travel Strategies:

- Consider a multi-destination ticket so you don't have to circle back to your point of entry
- find a good fare: I won't go into the that here, several good threads on this already
- always use public transportation - cabs are a waste
- WALK! you've got feet - use them, expect to walk at least 10 miles a day

Room & Board Strategies:

- crash on friends couches when you can (consider making more friends!)

- try to take overnight trains and sleep while traveling
if you're still not rested and the weather is nice take a nap in a public park (consider tethering your backpack to your wrist)

- sleep in hostels and don't opt for the private rooms
as was mentioned earlier, bring a lock so you can secure your stuff while you're out

-consider camping, a very lightweight backpacking tent could save you some money in the right places

- take advantage of the airline lounges (you have access as an international traveler)

- if breakfast is provided at the hostel take advantage of that

- if you want to go out lunch is frequently a cheaper meal than dinner

- find a grocery store and buy some staples on the cheap

- buy far fewer drinks in bars, buy at shops and drink in the street (you probably won't get a ticket and you can always play dumb American with them)

- opt to cook with your hostel mates and participate in any group meals

The bf has never been on a plane. I'm not interested in driving through Mexico to get somewhere cool. He will have a major anxiety attack on a long plane ride, we need to do a short one for his first flight.

So I thought cruise because he could feel international and we could drive. Whatevs.

I ran out of room for vacation to fit asstwat.

We once traded some shit for a pool table we never used then retraded for sme other shit. Haha

Besides Costa Rica what other Central American places would be cool to visit? I'm so undecided!

Oh and I wouldn't spend $5k on a hot tub, I found a kick ass one of Craigslist brand new for $2800. Has 81 jets and shit
