Texas is awesome. I have a good friend in Houston. He loves it.

I lived in on North Padre- near Corpus. It's pretty awesome down there. Lots of Texas pride. You'll enjoy it, as long as you're a cool person. From what I gather...Houston is a lot like, oh, say Charlotte.....But you're near Galveston- which is like...oh, say....Myrtle Beach meets Johnston County. With more money.

Oh yeah, and everyone has ties to oil companies. You should understand the petroleum process within a month.

Houston is pretty freakin cool. It’s the 4th largest city in the US and it is spread out like a mofo. The epitome or urban sprawl. You have to drive everywhere unless you live within walking distance to work/grocery store/bars. I haven’t ridden the public transit buses but they seem to be pretty good.

There is a ton of stuff to do. The music scene here is AWESOME!! You have Houston Rockets games, Astros games (Astros suck though), and of course the Texans NFL team is huge here. Hell football in general is huge here. If you like sports this is a great place to be.

The nightlife is really cool here too. You have the downtown museum district and discovery green which is kind of swanky, Washington Ave which is a much younger crowd. If you go there check out Kung Fu bar. And then there is the medical district, Galleria area and the Woodlands which all have a different feel. There are tons of parks and green spaces too.

Now lets talk about summer….IT SUCKS!! It gets crazy hot here. However, last year it was actually cooler in Houston then it was in Raleigh, but that’s not normal. The best I can say to give you an idea of summer is that it’s like late July/early August in Raleigh but from June through September. So it’s hot and humid for longer. The best time to be here is the fall/winter/spring. Shorts and flip flops year round. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Oh...one more thing. There are a TON of hot chicks here. From what I've gathered, the fat chicks don't really go out. You see a lot of fat people at Wal-Mart and maybe at your work place, but I think most of the fat people around here don't like the music or nightlife scene. I've seen way more attractive women here then I ever did in Raleigh.

I basically lived there for summer 2010 while I was working at Johnson Space Center. It is a really cool place. There are public tours of Johnson Space Center, definitely go on one of those. Like mentioned above all of downtown is pretty cool. Definitely eat at Chuy's even if you don't like Mexican/TexMex, the food is unbelievably good. Be prepared to return loving beef brisket if you don't already. I can't do NC BBQ after living there. Oddly enough this little hole in the wall http://www.bayareameatmarket.com/restaurant.html had the best BBQ I've ever eaten but there are some good places closer in to Houston as well. If you have time, drive down to Galveston at least once just to check it out. It's unlike any beach area that I've been to. Like mentioned above, be prepared to drive to anywhere you need to go. Everything is like 30-45 minutes farther away than you expect. If you have to fly in to Houston, use Hobby Airport (HOU) instead of Bush (IAH).

You should eat at Goode seafood co, pappadeux in Seabrook, see JSC, and the museums downtown. You can see everything worth seeing in Galveston in a day. Peti's next to Ellington airport is an institution, eat there to. Bay area meat market is good, lived round the corner for a while.

I've only ever been there twice, both on work trips, but I'm assuming you'll be near JSC. It was super hot and humid both times but if you make friends there you'll have fun. As was previously mentioned, it is pretty spread out -- you'll probably want your own car while there so you don't have to rely on anyone else (At MSFC they give you the option of them paying for your flights in/out or paying you for the mileage on the car, I'd assume it is the same at JSC).

Yeah, I'll be driving down. Due to budget cuts, I'm pretty much just getting my stipend and told to make it work, so no kind of mileage pay for me. Still stoked though, great chance to do something that will help me stand out on my resume.

The Monterrey is good. The StrEAT Bar (or however they spell it) is good, but it's pretty damning when the best meals in a city come out of the back of a truck.

I went to San Antonio just a few weeks ago. We had a great time! My parents flew into Houston and we drove to SA. Stayed for two nights. Between the 3 days there we experienced the River Walk in the morning, afternoon and late night. Night was definitely my favorite. Not as many kids running around. It's definitely not fuckin Venice or anything but we thought it was pretty fucking cool.

If you like American history the Alamo is definitely worth a visit.

We also experienced the City Market and really liked it. I'm Hispanic though so Mexicans don't bother me.

galveston is weird, and people that live there have a very strange pride about being island people... but it's a pretty shitty island. they're all tight nit though, mostly due to the fact they keep getting wiped out by hurricanes and going back. the beach is kinda gross, i don't get in the water, and there's a dangerous rip current, but there are some secluded areas that are nice to go to and get some reading in. plus it's easy to get to. many people never go though, because it is a shitty beach. swing down to padre or something for a good beach, but at that point might as well drive to gulf shores or florida or somewhere east of the mississippi. things west of it are kinda gross. there's a lot of neat architecture in galveston though, and it's worth taking a tour or two of some of the old mansions. lots of history. hit the spot for fried seafood and a beer with a view. brews brothers on the strand is kinda awesome for an up and coming beer bar. hipstery, but cheap. some other nice bistros there too.

there's fat people everywhere. of course there's a lot of fat people here, you get white milk gravy with chicken tenders. you're not forced to hang out with fat people. most of them stay inside when it gets hot anyways. hang out with better people.

there's a nice little ncsu alumni group here for some game watches a couple times per year.

i run into ncsu people all the time with the amount of engineering that's going down here. there's a few in my neighborhood alone.

contrary to what sparky mentioned, i don't find the music scene awesome... but most of that is derived from the fact that most of the venues and artists i like to see get booked while people are in between new orleans and austin, so it'll be shows on tuesdays or some shit. i'm getting too old for that. however, if you're into finding a random honkey tonk with a good texas country band playing, you can get settled out just right. speaking of which, "texas country" is great. from townes van zandt to modern day people like ryan bingham and hayes carll, there's some interesting stuff going on.

the astros are terrible, but you can get into the stadium for like $5. while bringing in your own food. and they won't check you, so bring in a flask. with the roof open, it's a great time.

i used to go out a lot downtown, but i'm kinda over it. midtown is fun, if you're ok with your normal downtowny bar scene.

hit the turtle races at little woodrows on thursday nights in the summer for some awesome scenery. gambling on turtles for free beer? yes please. (hint, the same turtles win every week. figure out the good ones and drink for free).

washington is weird and i never really enjoy places there.

hay merchant and petrol station are my two favorite places in the city. beer bars garnering a national reputation for selection, and world class food to go with it. petrol is kind of a poor man's hay merchant, and the prices reflect it. there's some great bottle shares that pop up at petrol, and if it weren't like, a 75 minute drive for me i'd be there every day. the rancor burger is tits. the fried pig ears at petrol, with a live oak hef... well dammit that's just good shit.

i enjoy brc and mongoose vs cobra too, for more up and comers.

boondoggles in clear lake is trying, but almost there

nobi public house just opened on 3 and nasa and could be my new favorite of them all... a bahn mi joint mixed with one of the best curated craft taps in the state? yes please.

speaking of which, the vietnamese population here creates this awesome fusion of asian, mexican, southern, polish, and german culture.

you can seriously eat at fucking fantastic places, direct form all around the world, just after a few minutes in the car.

oxheart, uchi, underbelly, feast... these are some of my favorite high end restaurants. bring your wallet though.


for the weather, i really love the heat. some hate it. i love it, whatever.

this was true years ago, but it's a city that's in the midst of a pretty awesome cultural revolution. it's pretty inspiring to see a city evolving rapidly, and developing it's own cultural scene. if you're into theater, there's a shit load. if you're into the arts, there's a shit load. if you're into festivals, there's a shitload. if you can't find it, you're not looking, or just fucking lame.

plus, why haven't the million or so people moved back to LA after the hurricanes if it sucks so bad?

Concerning the music scene...I was comparing it to Raleigh. Since I've been here I've seen Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, on Halloween Even no less, Muse with Dead Sara; over the next couple months the Deftones, Smashing Pumkins, The Lumineers, Bullet for my Valentine, Paramore, Blue October, Soundgarden, and Mumford & Sons are all coming to town. There are several venues to watch music and then you have all the festivals. The music scene here isn't as good as Nashville, Austin or New Orleans but I've found it much better then Raleigh.

^^ what do you listen to...Country? seems like they would have a good Country scene down here. I think there is a Jazz fest next week which I may check out. The Latin music scene here is pretty big too.
