That's like getting credit for peacefully surrendering at the end of a multi-state high-speed chase with collisions and injuries.

I still don't get why they had a do-over after the GOP was found to be blatantly committing election fraud.

Quote :
"Here's the full story on what happened this morning with the veto override:

Almost every morning while we’re in session, the General Assembly begins with a "skeletal session." This is held for procedural reasons and no votes are taken. Gavel in, gavel out. A formality.

Not only is this session a formality, but on this specific occasion Republican leadership had actually told the Democrats there would be no votes. This is routine. Non-voting sessions happen almost every single day.

But on this morning - after telling Democrats that there would be no votes - the House Republicans used the skeletal session to ambush Democrats with the biggest vote of the year.

At 8:40 a.m., they called a vote on the veto override on our $24 billion budget.

To understand what a big deal this was, you have to know that the (Democratic) Governor had vetoed their (Republican-passed) budget about two months ago. Both sides were in the process of negotiating a better budget, with major issues including teacher pay and Medicaid expansion.

It’s also important to know that this is the first time in almost a decade that Republicans have actually had to negotiate with Democrats on the budget. Until the last election, the GOP had the votes to override any gubernatorial veto. Now they don’t, and for these folks who were used to absolute power that comedown has been absolutely excruciating.

So they found a way around it.

After telling Democrats there would be no votes, they called a vote.

This was while our Governor and at least one of our Democratic members were at a ceremony honoring those who died on September 11th.

A handful of Democrats were on the floor conducting other business. Rep. Butler, a Democrat from the coast, immediately stood and objected. Other members asked to be recognized so they could object, but the Speaker refused to recognize them and proceeded with the vote.

The budget veto was overridden, 55-9.

When they called the surprise vote, barely half the members of the body were present - almost all of them Republicans. They had planned this.

The veto still stands in the Senate, where our members intend to defend it.

It's remarkable to say this because in five years I've seen some really bad stuff, but I think this qualifies as a new low. To be openly dishonest and use that to pass the most high-profile legislation of the year is a new level of outright corruption that I hadn't seen before today."

Jeff Jackson, State Senator, District 37

I'm confused why they would do this if the democrats are sure to uphold the veto in the senate? They've now wasted a dirty trick that doesn't get them anything and blown any remaining trust they may have had

seems like bad game theory to me no?

All they have to do is get one Dem to vote to override the veto in the Senate. It's not a shoe in unless every single Dem is that mad about this move made in the House.

[link]http://https://indyweek.com/news/northcarolina/poll-puts-tillis-approval-ratings-in-the-gutter-in-trouble-f/[/link]

Quote :
"Poll: Everyone Thinks Thom Tillis Sucks
by Leigh Tauss

Senator Thom Tillis, a man with the backbone of a squid and zealous supporter of President Definitely No Quid Pro Quo Donald Trump, has the lowest approval ratings of any sitting member of Congress, according to a poll from Morning Consult, which could put his 2020 reelection bid in trouble.

Tillis has a mere 33 percent approval rate, according to the survey, with another 30 percent undecided and 38 percent disapproving of him.

Tillis is one of several Republican senators polling precariously in swing states, putting Senator Mitch McConnell's trusty GOP majority in that chamber in jeopardy (McConnell isn't polling to hot either, with a 50 percent disapproval rate).

The Tillis campaign raised $1.2 million in the third quarter, which is about as much as Republican challenger Garland Tucker, a Raleigh businessman, has committed of his own funds to beating Tillis in the primary.

If Tillis does make it through the primary, his odds of winning reelection look even bleaker, according to a September poll that showed Tillis trailing Democrat Cal Cunningham by two points, 45-43.

"Cunningham wasn’t the Democrats’ top recruit, but this race is turning more into a referendum on Tillis. If Cunningham wins the nomination and runs a competent race, Tillis will face major hurdles in winning a second term," reports Josh Kraushaar for The National Journal.

Other Democrats vying for the seat in the primary include State Senator Erica Smith and Mecklenberg County Commissioner Trevor Fuller.

In the grand scheme of things, if Tillis loses, Democrats will only need to net another three seats to take control of the Senate and actually stand up to the Criminal-in-Chief (assuming he gets another term as well.)

"In a normal political environment, Republicans would have good reason to be confident they could win some of these hotly contested races," Kraushaar writes. "But given the trajectory of Trump’s presidency and the trend lines in the battlegrounds, Republicans don’t have much room for error. Right now, control of the Senate past 2020 looks awfully close to a toss-up with over a year until the election."

Good luck, Thom. "

I am frustrated by both sides at this point. The Dem's say the Repub's don't want to bargain but at the same time the Governor will not bargain either on Medicaid expansion. Additionally the Governor fucks other state employees more while giving the teachers another big raise in his ideal budget. The stalemate budget at least gives state employees a raise more in line with what teachers get. The Governor's budget would have given us (higher ed employees) a .5% raise over two years, while the Legislative budget would give us 5% over two years.

I have no problem with Medicaid expansion and I'm not a fan of Berger and crew but not exactly feeling the love from either side. Since my wife and I are both employed in higher ed we are both going without a raise and probably not going to look forward to one until 2021 at this rate.
