Say you're sitting around a conference table with 15 co-workers, waiting on someone (that no one has met before) for a meeting to start. Given the below situations, what do you do when that person enters the conference room. Do you stand up/should everyone stand up? Anything else?
1 - Someone higher up in your company (eg bosses boss) - male 2 - Someone higher up in your company (eg bosses boss) - female 3 - President/CEO of your company - male 4 - President/CEO of your company - female 5 - Salesman - male 6 - Salesman - female 7 - Prominent government official - male 8 - Prominent government official - female

If it was Japan, everyone would bow individually.
Here in America, we wave from our seats and continue to snack on the candy on the conference room table, while checking twitter from our smart phones. 4/5/2013 9:03:53 AM

I usually don't see anyone stand up. Just a glance over to acknowledge someone entered the room, and general verbal welcoming to the meeting.
Maybe we are too casual where I work 4/5/2013 9:09:14 AM

i've never even considered that scenario where i work. i suppose there is very little courtesy. should there be? are you more comfortable in a work environment where you stand up, etc when someone superior walks into the room? or is it more comfortable for you to be somewhere that very little recognition is given to someone superior? (other than, "only say ___, ___, & ___ and definitely don't say anything about ___ because district supervisor so & so is coming today") or is there some kind of happy medium? 4/5/2013 9:26:08 AM

I would just like it if my technologically inept coworkers would put their phones on "vibrate" during meetings...
Or realized that once their phone starts ringing from a call, that you can push the button on the side to make it stop ringing. Jesus tittyfucking Christ.

Is the entire room on a fancy date with this person and is she female?
If yes to both of those, then yes.
If no to one of those, then no. 4/5/2013 10:02:11 AM

If its a client I will stand up to shake their hand, otherwise just acknowledge and say hi. If its a colleague or superior I don't see often or havent seen in awhile I would also stand up to shake their hand.
gender would not change any reactions

So, in this scenario, all 15 people should stand up, get in a line, and wait their turn to shake hands with the person? 4/5/2013 10:14:25 AM

i would get up, the people with me would not since i'm the lead for my group in the meeting
if all 15 of us tried to get up the person entering would acknowledge them letting them know its okay to sit down because shaking 15 hands is silly. they may even say "please, stay seated" 4/5/2013 11:26:23 PM

If its a customer or client, always stand and introduce yourself.
If its the CEO, always stand and introduce yourself.
If its someone you're meeting for the first time, but will likely be working with in the future, shake hands and introduce yourself
Otherwise sit and say hello, introduce yourself if they or others do. 4/6/2013 12:02:24 AM
