Which do you think you would do?

I think I know at least enough biology where I could be helpful, though I'm not a medical professional. At least enough where I would be helping in the very acute time before real help gets on the way. So I'd stay and help.

i've never been at the scene of a terrorist attack, but i've helped rescue a woman from a car right before it exploded and went to the aid of a diver that hit his head into the diving board. so i like to think that i'd try to help.

Scout and first aid training says help. Carrying a camera everywhere though, my first instinct might be to stick around and shoot pictures. Not sure that is a good response.

we must have been the 100th or so car to drive past a man driving 5 mph down a busy 4 lane road. We pulled over to find the man drooling, clearly having some diabetic shock/coma. Parked his car and at least 20 people followed us.

I seriously doubt the altruism of the general public.

PS the responding officer thought he was "drunk"

I'd love to think I'd stick around and help but I've never been in an urgent situation where instinct kicks in and all rational thought goes out the window. Who knows, maybe I'd run away screaming.

I won't judge people who run away. I will judge society for not raising people throughout the entire lives to help out. I think it's an issue related to the reasoning behind constantly drilling for something in the military/law enforcement/medical/fire fighting professions. You do it over and over so that it becomes your go to, instinctual response.

I haven't been in any accidents or anything recently, but when I was like 16 and the van in front of me flipped about 6 times I just pulled over and sat there.. I'd like to think I'd help now, I was a first responder for some class in college.. But who really knows til something happens

Since you specified a terrorist attack:

Run.

Unless you're qualified to help treat the wounded you'll either be in the way of trained emergency works or another potential victim.

Run.

I've helped in car accidents and whatnot but I'm not an EMT and not qualified to treat anyone. My blood and plasma would be worth far more than my help to victims.

If it's just me, on my own, help.

If I'm with family or my students, my first instinct is get them to safety.

After thinking about it, I did have a stressful situation last year, but not a terrorist attack. Going down the road in the car coming towards us lost control and went down an embankment and flipped. In that case we immediately pulled over, made sure everybody was okay, and I called 911 to get them assistance. They were just shaken up. But we had several other cars that witnessed the accident and pulled over to assist.

I had my camera, but for once it was in my trunk, and not up front with me. After they were okay I seriously considered getting it out and snapping, but chose not to.

Terrorist attack or not, if bombs go off and I see people that need help, I will help them. But I have been known to have pretty serious disregard for my own life.

I took photos during a roadside fire once. It was awesome.

RV full of a family coming back from a dog show caught fire on 95 in Florida. Our driver was a volunteer EMT so he pulled over to help so I grabbed my camera and took photos of the response crew. We later emailed a bunch of them to the guys since they were a bunch of volunteers and most of the crew were in training.

No lie

Not saying I wouldn't help people I come across, but its stupid to run back into the incident

I'd run to the explosion and hang out near the first explosion to guarantee i wouldn't be killed in the subsequent explosions.

^^^As big as you are, and this is a compliment not a troll, there's certainly things that you could do to help in that kind of a situation, even if not medical.

Also good point about being alone vs with family

I would hope that I would be able to do something to help. But I have a strong feeling that I'm one of those people that would just freeze and stand there, not running or helping, but stand there in shock.

I think even with first aid training most people would make the situation worse by rushing in to help. Entering an unsecured crime scene can be dangerous and at worst you could end up being hurt by subsequent attacks, then tying up emergency responders who will have to tend to your injuries as well.

Big got nothin to do with it I haven't the skill knowledge nor am I sure I'd have the presence of mind to improvise without being a liability in some form

The people that can be heroic are few and far between they're no joke

No one should be running back into an explosion that's for sure; I think if someone were like "hey man come help carry this guy outta here" or "hey stop this bleeding" I'd do it but in a crisis situation I'm almost 90% sure I'd need a capable person providing instruction that just me knowing myself

I don't know what I'd do. I was thinking about this when I reading about it being a terrorist attack. I REALLY hope I help and don't blank out and run away. I don't think I am a coward but I don't know if I would be aware of the needs of others, especially if I am perfectly fine.

If I take the job I was just offered or get the other job i've applied for I will be affiliated with one of the state disaster response teams in the area. So, I would be right in the middle of the chaos.

If I have my camera I'm taking pictures as I've done regularly for fire and police departments for the past 3-4 years. If I don't have my gear then I will help. I don't really care about personal safety apparently.

you aren't going to be in the way of trained personnel, because i'm assuming this means you are there when it occurs. most likely there wouldn't be any there as a terrorist attack was occuring.

that said, i would help. mainly because i'm a helpful person and i have very little regard for my own life.

Pretty much this exactly. It might also depend on if I had my wife and kids with me or not. I think my first instinct would be to get them to safety, but if I was alone I would like to think my instinct would be to help as much as possible.

I'm surprisingly calm and cool in life threatening situations or during emergencies. Not sure why, but during fight or flight scenarios, my mind is lucid and rational and I respond pretty well. I'd like to think my prior experiences would provide for this type of clarity/calm, but I honestly don't know about a full-blown terrorist attack. I'd hope that I'd be helpful in whatever capacity I could, but you never really know until you're in that situation.

i'd like to think i would, as long as i felt like there was something i could actually do.

it's tough to say, having never been through a super-intense moment like that.

i'd help not out of any overriding feeling of justice or bravery but out of the fact that my life sucks and I might as well do what I can to make sure others suffer as little as possible

im not sure. Id have to be in one to really know but based on my inability to stop and help broken down pedestrians and donate to roadside bums Ill have to guess roll up my windows and keep double trucking the tricky two

I would help. Like someone else said, medical professionals won't be right there immediately. Today, I wouldn't be surprised if some were saved because someone near them thought to tie a tourniquet around their blow off limb. Any little thing helps

I told my fiancee as we watched the video with the bomb going off that, "I'd run in the exact opposite direction of the explosion." Thank goodness she agreed.

I'd like to think I'd help in the aftermath, but I think you're a fucking idiot if you run TOWARDS bombs going off.
