While lame, midnight liquor store closure is almost a non-issue in comparison to 2am last call.

That being said, I keep a very well stocked home bar (about 81 bottles of spirits, liqueurs, amaros, etc. last I checked), so I'm never sitting at home at midnight cursing the corner liquor store for being closed.

Not to play my back in Europe card....

But back in Europe, the city basically closed when you were ready to go home. In fact, when I was going through some very hard times and couldn't sleep at night, I use to go out to my favorite bar just to sit on their patio and watch the sun rise.

Nice. Yeah, if an establishment has workers willing to work and they have patrons willing to pay, who cares? But liquor laws are still strange all over the US. Even in NYC with a 4am last call at lots of spots, you can't sell liquor before noon on Sundays still..

West Coast states like CA/HI/NV/WA really are amazing if you're a drinker. I feel bad for anyone who has to deal with going to an ABC store, when you can not only buy whatever booze you want at the grocery store from 6am-2am 7 days a week (well, at least in CA), but you can get Costco liquor which is awesome/cheap, and happy hour is way of life. The 2am bar/club rule is kinda lame, but I'm getting kind of old to be out that late anyway

I was in NC recently visiting my parents and we went to a distillery to do a bourbon tour, and I couldn't believe how archaic and convoluted the liquor laws are.

Gotta love elitist west coasters, especially ones from the bay area.

Sorry NC’s and Texas’ alcohol laws suck ass. Their MJ laws are even worse.

Well, to be fair, the reasoning for having a strict closing time is to prevent a mass of loud, drunk people parading around the city while others are trying to sleep. In all of the bars or clubs that I frequently visited, most of them did have restrictions on people hanging around and drinking outside past a certain hour.

Having said that, the idea of "hey guys, it's x o'clock, we gotta close" regardless of how many people were there was something that I never encountered in Europe. Like, never ever. Typically, if a place was in certain areas with noise restrictions, you would see the bar manager lock the door at a certain time so that new people couldn't come in, but the rest of us could remain and order more drinks for as long as we wanted. Clubs or techno halls would usually stay open until the crowd started to thin out, but in most cases that would be until 4 if not 6 in the morning.

But, I am reminded of how annoying this "closing time" culture is in the US since I've been back here. It makes absolutely zero sense to me, from a capitalistic perspective, to shut down a place full of people spending money just because it happens to be 2 AM.

Agreed. Also no happy hour or bottomless bloody Mary’s. And don’t act like these things don’t matter when you know they do.
