Well it is not here yet but we'll be announced May 21 so I'm just gonna go ahead and get this topic a parking spot. What made me really notice this was that my AMD securities price spiked a little today. Read more about it here

iop1 I won't be owning one as the hardware is a little worse than my 2 year old pc and I'm hoping this means games are designed for pc first since everything is x86 now. 4/24/2013 9:50:21 PM |

I am not sure what I am doing this generation. I like PC games better now not becasue I think the PC is better, but because its more convenient and mods can breath fresh air into stale games. 4/24/2013 9:58:15 PM |

Think it'll be worth it of you mainly play sports games? Also, Dweedle mentioned talk of a possible jerk off game for Kinect? 4/24/2013 10:13:17 PM |

It's rumored that you will be able to teabag via Kinect exclusively in Halo 4.

The only reason this is true is because EA Sports purposely gives PC gamers the shaft. No football ever, nerfed versions of Tiger Woods... so yeah, I guess so. I skipped the PS3/360 gen in favor of PC, enough console games came out for the PC to the point where I really didn't feel like I was missing out. The only games I truly wanted to play but couldn't were NCAA College Football and Red Dead Redemption. Not really worth buying a console just to play two games.
I remember back in the first year or so of the 360/PS3 many of the PC versions of the console games were crappy ports of the old gen versions. The excuse then was that developers didn't want to make a game too advanced for the majority of computers out there, make the game playable for a larger number of machines. I guess that won't be as big a problem this time around.
I suspect more and more people will transition from consoles to PCs. Consoles lose their value a bit more with each new gen, essentially it's a locked down PC that's not going to be backwards compatible so it becomes completely obsolete in 6 years.
If the new consoles do move industry toward a service model, essentially making games online rentals, I'll just find a new hobby... or just stick with playing old school stuff from back in the day when the technology wasn't quite good enough to allow companies to try and squeeze every cent out of their customers. The good old days, when you could pick up a 2 year old version of Madden used for $1.99 instead of paying the $60/year subscription to Madden.

^ and PC's dont lose value? You either gotta update your rig every 3 years unless you want to play the latest games on low performance. Either that or buy a new 300 dollar video card. 4/25/2013 8:56:15 AM |

Not sure if I'll get one, I'd probably just buy a gaming PC and/or a Roku if they decide to remove Xbox Live for the 360 after the 720 release. I only use my xbox to play Netflix and Skyrim now anyway.
Mostly because console games are solely sequel subscriptions now, but also this:

When I say lose value over time I'm referring more to what a each console generation initially brings to the table. Long ago consoles were great because they were plug and play. Computers were update config.sys, autoexec.bat, cross your fingers on your sound card, etc. Lots and lots of guesswork as to whether a game would run on any given system. I can't remember the last time I had to do anything more than install and play a PC game.
There were also many, many more exclusives back in those days. Which console you opted for determined which library of games you'd be playing, now 90% the games are available for both consoles- even a high percentage of games are ported to the PC.
Just saying that with each passing generation consoles look more and more like a locked down/limited feature PC. The question becomes why buy a console if the PC already offers a very similar experience? Of course that's subjective and depends on the individual. I figure I'm going to have a PC so that's a sunk cost, the difference between the computer I would have bought and a gaming rig is close to, if not cheaper than a console so might as well go PC.
Sure I might have to get a new graphics card eventually (mine has lasted 4 years w/o problem, largely owed to game developers sill developing games for 2004 technology) but at least when I toss in that new graphics card all my games will still work on the updated computer without a need to repurchase all my games to get them to work again.
I'll still miss consoles once the NCAA Football games start to peak on the upcoming gen. Not gonna drop $500 for one game though.
Edit: Sorry for PC fanboy rant. I'm done

Because consoles and gaming PC's are in massively different price brackets.
Gaming consoles are all in the sub $300 street price range. Gaming PC's are at LEAST double that pricepoint.
You completed the circle on a classic and longstanding logical fallacy. The "I sunk X cost into a computer so the additional Y cost of making it a gaming rig" is bullshit.
Your average consumer buying a $300 pc is not going to be capable or usable as a gaming rig by JUST upgrading the video card. And the difference in market volume between a 600-1000 gaming PC and a 150-300 console is absolutely massive.
Game consoles have ALWAYS been about taking commodity hardware and utilizing it for a specific industry vertical (gaming). This isn't new, it was the strategy from the beginning. It is still the strategy today. The only difference is that we the consumer are getting closer and closer access to the individual components and architectures.4/25/2013 7:09:33 PM |

well, the price of the 720 is rumored to be $300 with a required $240 Xbox Live contract, which I presume will be the basis of the 'always on' deal
Quote : | "Technology blogger, Paul Thurrott says that “Microsoft will initially offer two pricing models for the console: a standalone version for $499 and a $299 version that requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at an expected price of $10 per month.”" |

I'm more interested in the rumored cable box interaction and as a set-top for content from my computer than for games. If its true that it will have a low-power ready state for cable box interaction and can completely interact with it, that would be awesome.
(Games are still important, but they are secondary) 4/26/2013 10:40:19 AM |

Hold on, now. While there was some commodity hardware involved in the Intellivision and early Atari consoles, consoles have historically been fuckin' rife with ASICs and other purpose-built stuff. I'm not a hardware guy, but think about all the major consoles with custom processors or video: NES, Genesis, SNES, Dreamcast, N64, PS2, etc.4/26/2013 10:53:47 AM |

Pretty sure they see how much MS is raking in and that will be going away. Everyone happily throws money at MS to have access to basic apps (e.g. Netflix) and online multiplayer.
I could see a Playstation+ sub required for online play.4/28/2013 3:08:46 PM |

PS3 was a more versatile console (well the first gen was), and depending on what genere of game you prefer on console (vs pc) it is a superior choice. 5/21/2013 7:39:36 PM |
