7 dead, most likely stalled in result of a massive CG shift.

That was at Bagram. I'm guessing cargo shifted way to the rear, or flight control (elevator) failure.

I actually flew with a guy today who punched out of an Intruder (he hit the ground still in his seat, before the 'chute opened...although it did finally open and drag him about 350' across the ground). It was this exact thing--flight control failure (due to a bolt being 1/2" shorter than specified and coming disconnected) causing an early rotation and uncontrollable pitch-up at takeoff.

(but if I had to guess on this 747, I'd put my money on cargo shifting rearward under acceleration/climb)

It looks like his speed was low, the angle narrow and he stalled the fuck out of it and overall didn't know what he was doing anyway. To me...

Nah, I'm pretty sure that was beyond their control.

Maybe, in hindsight, they could have rolled it 90 degrees while they still had enough speed for control authority in order to prevent it from pitching up so far and getting so slow, and then rolled it back wings level with a more survivable sink rate. It would have been a crash, and a bad one, but maybe survivable, although fairly counterintuitive at the time. What they did looks to me like appropriate "normal" recovery inputs, but the jet just wasn't flyable.

Just wondering wtf could have happened to get him cocked up in the wind like that. Cargo shift?

Do planes like that have any mechanism for dumping cargo?

Looks like they did try to roll though.

that sucks if it was cargo

I have an image of this fat lady dragging a huge dog-carrier up to the side of the plane, and saying "I simply must bring Toby on this trip. I don't trust those local dogsitters."

so Toby is duly loaded on, and he is the straw that breaks the plane's back, and half an hour later that old lady and 100 other innocents are incinerated

this is probably a psychologically revealing post]

A really interesting thing is that I(or many people ) just accept that these magical planes can fly thrpugh the sky...and I have no idea of the plane works but it's pretty fucking badass

and then the experts fuck up and enormous quanties of Ameriican blood and guts are spilled across American soil

it happens, but it's always mighty sad.

I assumed technical diagram was being sarcastic

but as I understand it, the actual machinisms of flight are still somewhat mysterious

so maybe technical diagram is serious, and I needn't abandon my belief in elves, ogres etc.

horrifying; and I have a hard enough time flying without imagining scenarios of how things could go wrong.

but - sumbitch just falls out of the sky?

also....

Exactly. I have always wished that I could wear a 'chute when flying on civilian airplanes, but thanks to that fuckhead DB Cooper I can't.

I've only landed once in a military plane, (when we landed in Iraq, took a civilian contracted jet back), the rest of the time I've jumped out of them.

almost certainly never got retracted. I don't know shit about shit when it comes to planes but I doubt dropping your gear is something you'd want to do if you want to drift out of a stall

jesus christ, they basically hammerhead stalled a 747

With that extreme of a pitch I'm surprised they didn't just tailslide right back into the ground. wow

I was wondering how long it would take to get out

rumor mill is running wild here

"loadmaster was new, 1st day on job without the old guy"
maybe true, maybe not

"C-130 crossed runway infront of it, they had to pull up cuasing the cargo to slide aft"
False

"Bird strike, since birds are dying everywhere"
False tied into a true, wtf is up with all the dead birds?!

And my personal favorite:
"It was a russian crew contracted by the company, and they were drunk"
False, but tied into a true, drunk russian contractor pilots are around

The Taliban released a statement claiming responsibility for the plane crash. They claim they shot it down.

What a bunch of idiots. Nobody believes you, but at least make a someone plausible claim.
