not sure about windspeed but the local anchors were comparing it to the may 3rd 1999 tornado that hit the same area. it cause 1.2 billion in damage and they said this was way way worse.

2 miles wide damage path in some areas, EF-4 at least.

I dont even want to speculate on the death toll but its not gonna be good.

Probably going to be the worst tornado based on amount of damage done.

Im afraid the casualty numbers on the schools kids are going to be obscene beyond imagination. This fucking thing came through at the worst possible timing, they didnt want to release the schoolkids because it would have hit while they were in transit home so they kept them at the schools.

it was a no win situation

Have tornados been getting worse or more frequent, or is it just the amount of media coverage? Just a couple years ago North Carolina got hit pretty hard, and I never really thought of NC as a tornado state before. Is this a climate thing or a freak thing?

clearly it's climate. tornadoes didn't happen before global warming.

i think its mostly the media coverage and the fact that everyone has cameras on them at all times now. until this outbreak this year has been relatively tornado free.

also, the damage tends to be worse than in the past simply because of increased population density.

Also, eastern NC and SC have their own miniature tornado alley.

[Edited on May 20, 2013 at 7:59 PM. Reason : carolina alley]

I don't know if the school kid casualty numbers will be obscene beyond imagination, there weren't that many students in the school, something like 75-85 students

Well, the thread title seems like hyperbole too, though it's technically possible that it's the worst tornado in history. Although that means it's also technically possible that it's the best tornado in history.

that's why i wanted to make sure i put that qualifying "possibly" in there, just to cover all my bases.

This is, after all, the first thread i have created on T-Dub.

AP says at least 60 injured so far, 37 dead.
Huffington Post's front page says the town was "flattened"... I'm afraid to look at the images

But through all of this, don't forget: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/20/how-to-help-oklahoma_n_3308962.html

As far as the storm intensity, this has happened many times before throughout history. They just didn't hit as heavily a populated area.

There are (probably) times when using colloquialisms concerning bombs are (not in)appropriate. Talking about dead children is probably not one of those times

Side note: BlackJesus's post count is almost a palindrome
