if you non internet having fucks make it so i have to have to insert a disk for an installed game, I'm going to find each one of you in multiplayer games, kill you in that game, then repeatedly squat while my character is positioned over the head of your character's corpse. otherwise, this is great to quiet the haters but I never had a problem with the DRM and think it was fine.

I wonder if dtownral is still going to want one?

Maybe no-CD cracks will start to come out for the console.

^^Even if they do, you can still buy all your games digitally. Just pretend the disc version doesn't exist.

I mean they had to do it. You can't lose on price AND on this extra stuff.

I don't think Microsoft cares as much about the DRM except it wanted to throw a bone to publishers. But since the publishers didn't overtly back up MS over Sony then MS shouldn't care about doing something they want.

So is the main gripe of requiring a disc in the tray related to slow load times or the inconvenience of swapping discs? I'm sure they'll do what computers used to do where the game is fully installed and the disc is only required to pass the security check. So that leaves it with:

The inconvenience of swapping disks.
vs.
Maybe not being able to play games due to an unreliable network or even the possibility of the whole system getting bricked at the end of its life cycle.

I'm sure there will still be games that require and use the internet except now maybe they won't be relying on the net for their DRM scheme.

I'm more bothered by the mention of the Engadget article that the system will probably have to rely heavily on an IR blaster. I thought the prevalence of the CEC was more common. I've never had an IR blaster setup that worked well so if the TV magic doesn't work smoothly I'll be very disappointed.

Swapping and keeping up with discs, fuck Microsoft. This will probably increase the time it takes for game to be available to download too, its probably going to be exactly like the 360.

the policy is exactly right, Microsoft just needed to explain it. Does anyone give steam a hard time for their DRM?

fuck that, my internet is fine, and digging out a disk and swapping it is an annoying holdover from the last century.

This really sucks. I'm keeping my preorder, but the XboxOne was PERFECT for my family as originally planned. Maybe they can offer the original enhancements (family share, digital transfers, play anywhere, no-disc, etc.) as part of enhanced Xbox Live "Platinum"

did they specifically say that the family share plan thing was gone? that actually seemed like a really cool feature where i could play games my out of state family members had. hell i just went to visit my gf family and had to lug around 4 big ass dics cases to play some games with her little borther. i was looking forward to being able to play EVERY game i bought available with carrying around a ton of discs. i hope the features they previously announced will still work with digital game downloads.

it actually sucks that they caved into a small fraction of the "hardcore" people who would probably bitch about anything. now people are complaining about swapping discs, but that is just they way it is. great lets stick to old tech and never advance.

also, where were this type of articles by gizmodo earlier?!? the media has been feeding the anti-drm, anti-used games sales, etc crowd and not informing the public of all the benefits. i really wish ms had a better plan to announce all these features, by actually explaining the benefits instead of just reading a list of requirements.

i'll say it again, apple became the biggest company in america by inventing, creating products and services we never needed. they just had a master pr department.

I kinda of understood all the bitching.... but I didn't really care because I knew this console was designed for me people and not you people. Now they had to include you people*. /sic

There will be an interesting reverse-backlash from all the guys that were silently satisfied with the initially announced "features".

*please note that "you people" generally refers to console trolls/fanboys that scream bloody murder about something that would only affect a minority of gamers

Yeah, I know I was a dick to Microsoft in my last post but after thinking a bit about the system the Xbone was originally going to introduce, I am a bit let down that they are reversing position now. It's nothing against Microsoft; the backlash was abundantly clear and I really don't blame them for changing course.

The only reason I am disappointed is that I now think Microsoft's strategy would have been an interesting experiment in the console world. There are several articles (some of which have been linked to in this thread......don't really feel like posting them here) arguing for the DRM system and how it could lead to cheaper games (a la Steam) and/or more money going back to the publishers. If either of those things were true I think it would be a great thing for gamers. I think having cheaper games is fairly straightforward. If more money went back to the publishers/devs then I wonder if studios by extension would be granted more freedom to make different kinds of games instead of sticking us with goddamn Call of Duty / Battlefield / Generic FPS every fucking year. Also, it would be great if Gamestop took it up the ass for once because seriously, fuck those guys.

Granted, none of the above could happen but I think the difference in approach could have yielded interesting results and the diversity would probably have been a good thing for gamers in the long term. Now, we are merely sticking to the status quo. Considering all the personal issues I have with the industry right now, it is now hard for me to think that any of these will change anytime soon now.

I don't think Microsoft really sold their original plan the way they should have. If they had presented it to be something more like a Steam box (which, excluding a few things like the physical media and Kinect 2, is basically what the X1 sounded like) then I don't think the backlash would have been nearly as severe. When you start bringing up shit like the always-on Kinect and/or the daily check-in it's hard for me to understand how they didn't have the foresight to know that that was going to be a stupid fucking thing to say to their customers.

I would've been fine with my PS4, and to watch Xbox One be a barometer for the way future consoles should run...but oh well. Now I've preordered one. We'll see which console I actually have delivered.

The thing about microsoft charging less for games because of no discs blah blah drm etc...yeah I read those articles too. No fucking way Microsoft was going to charge less for games. That's they're entire revenue system. They just floated that out there as an unofficial rumor to try and save face. "Oh gosh guys, we were just trying to save millions of people money with this feature." Right....

Yeah the more I'm reading about what is now not being included in the box, I liked more of the original planned stuff. I don't think they really gave a ton of information(like this Family Plan concept where you could share your games with up to 10 people) that could have really made things more appealing to customers.

Plus it's easy to say they would or wouldn't lower game prices because we really have no way of knowing what they'd do, but I think the average consumer would say that Microsoft was more likely to follow Steam's example and gradually lower prices and then start offering big sales on older titles online. And the reselling of old games and Publishers actually getting money on used game sales would have been a good thing(screw Gamestop).

Older titles? The rumor was that MS would possibly be selling NEW games for less money. You can already get older titles for a great price...

their revenue wouldn't decrease by charging less because the new DRM meant that you didn't need to pay the developer for the license for future reselling, and instead would allow them to collect money when it was resold. It would have meant that the initial purchase price to you would have been lower. but you idiots ruined that.

The thing is, if MS (or Sony) wanted to eliminate the used game market, they could already have made Day 1 digital game releases $10-$20 cheaper than their disc based counterparts. That would have been the end of GameStop, their doors would be shut within a month. They could have done that now, on PS3/360 with no need for DRM on disc based games. The thing is, they have no desire to do that. They don't want to piss off their retail partners by cutting them out of new game sales. That was the problem with the XBone. They were implementing all this DRM on disc based games without any apparent monetary incentive to the user.

there was monetary incentive to the user, as well as a ton of convenience incentives. they haven't said this yet, but what we are going to get now is delayed digital releases similar to how it works now with the xbox 360.

Its been said before but it is hilarious how now everyone seems to come out and say all this extra stuff MSoft has been talking about would have been great.

Personally I think if they had just dropped the "24 hour check in" they would be fine. You could still check whenever the machine was connected to the internet and perform the DRM. Sure you risk some piracy if someone decides to just keep their console offline 100% of the time but really how many people are we talking about here?

Bottom line is they failed at PR 101. You don't lead with bad news. Steve Jobs didn't introduce the iPhone with an hour long presentation on how it can't multitask, run any software you want, use custom ringtones, and are forced to use iTunes for music.

they failed because leaks about internet requirements were getting them killed in the press before it was even announced. when it was announced, it wasn't nearly as severe as claimed in the pre-announcement leaks but the damage had already been done and you fan boys were already busy cranking about memes to post in comment sections of anything about the xbox.

why would you support the DRM?

microsoft is hilariously childish. they advertise a sweeping DRM system with some good features, and some insanely bad ones. people complain, so they take away the DRM but also say "well if you don't want our DRM, you can't have any of the cool features we were going to implement either! suck our diiiiicks"

sony and microsoft are both terrible companies. PC for serious gaming. nintendo for multiplayer.

They aren't just arbitrarily taking away some of the cooler game sharing features as some sort of punishment for users resisting their DRM, those features cannot exist without DRM.

Sure they could have. Just make all those features available only for games purchased digitally. Disc based games could have continued working exactly like they do now. They could have demonstrated the value of the all digital library without compromising your physical disc library. Over time people would have migrated on their own, especially if prices on digital games dropped. This is basically what happened with Steam. You could/can still buy PC games on disc at the store if you wanted too, but eventually the majority of PC gamers moved exclusively to Steam because it was cheaper and more convenient.

It's not like PC gamers were any more tolerant of this sort of thing than console gamers. There was a huge backlash against Valve when they released Half-Life 2 where even the DVD version required an active/connected Steam account to play. Steam was a buggy pile of shit with limited features back in 2004 and Valve wasn't convincing anyone that making it mandatory was worth the hassle. But that was only one game, not an entire console library of games, and even then it took years for Valve to repair Steam's reputation and turn it into the one stop shop for PC games that it is today. The bottom line is that MS doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to this sort of shit, and imposing all those restrictions while saying "trust us, the benefits will come eventually!!!" just was never going to fly.
