Is this a new thing now? This has happened to me several times over the past few weeks. It just happened at Arby's a few minutes ago, and a random guy even offered to pay for a sammich, but i think the beggar just wanted hard cash for "groceries" (assumably to buy drugs/booze).

At the Murphy in Zebulon I have had the same guy hit me up with the whole "I need some money to get a little gas to get home" thing on three different occasions. Each time it is something different. Pick up my daughter from A&T, my moms is sick in the hospital, or his wife is pregnant and needs to get to the doctors office.

yeah that's the worst. especially when they give you this story about needing to catch a train or bus and being absolutely nowhere near a train or bus station. happened twice in 30 minutes to me in NYC a couple weeks back. All the way out in the UES two different bums with the same story about needing to get to New Jersey.

in college anytime i got hit-up, i'd offer to get them a burger or anything they wanted, but not cash. only a few people ever asked for a burger, but i got what they wanted every time if they did.

Redneck tried to sell me a Nascar license plate frame from his supposedly broken down car at a seafood restaurant... It was really awkward.

i had a guy sell me brake fluid so he could "buy a bus ticket to visit his wife". my wife gave me a really hard time because i gave the guy the $5, but i was just really curious if he would actually give me a quart of brake fluid.

he did, he was true to his word

I was standing outside a coffee shop that occasional has live music and this guy walks up and says hes performing tonight. I said that's cool maybe I'll stop in. He then says he is sorry but he just cancelled bc he has aids and his kids don't have food to eat.

Ooooof

Bo on Western has this sort of dinner theater from time to time. One time a guy walked up to our table and offered to sell us some DVDs. Another time a guy came up and warned us to protect our children (none of us had kids)

when I lived OFF GORMAN from 06-08, Western was full of nothing but beggars and nuts. the only place they didn't frequent was the Taco Bell and the DQ, so I'd go there. and heaven forbid trying to go to food dog over there

Seen it at Bojangles.

I don't think the owners should tolerate it, but I guess I don't know 100% that they do. It's a passable case, that they're hungry and just want you to buy them food. I still turn them down.

I only give homeless people cigarettes, it's my way of helping get them off the streets.

usually owners dont but the 16year old behind the counter doesnt really care either

plus 99% of the customer base just tolerates it and says nothing so no harm no foul

If i get accosted by a bum at a grocery store ill let management one of the teens at the register know that theres a bum out there and they always take care of it right away. So I feel its not about them not caring but that no one says anything to the employees.

At the Kangaroo on Avent Ferry, a guy drove up, parked at a pump, got out of his vehicle, and immediately asked me if I had any money. What the hell is this? Is this common?

EDIT: In undergrad I remember a guy that used to sit at the drive-thru for Taco Bell and HARASS people just before they order to give him some money.

Yeah, back in the day the panhandlers on Hillsborough would follow you into restaurants and take your change after you bought your food.

That guy came into bojangles around 2005 and took all our left over ice cups.

It's still weird to me that they will turn down food. My friend offered to go in a buy a guy a whole pizza who just asked for money for food and he turned him down. I mean, I know he wanted the money for booze or crack but why not take the free food at least.

that's actually really good business. a lot harder to lie and say "sorry, I don't have any change on me" when you're both staring at it in your palm.

If this is going on it's the result of shitty management letting it go on. There aren't many good excuses for having beggars hassling your customers inside your restaurant.

Since that's been brought up. I avoid businesses that have the beggar Girl Scouts out front and the beggar Santa Clause. I sure as hell will avoid a business that lets beggar bums harass people.

buying them a burger is not helpful

if you want to be helpful regarding food, direct them to a soup kitchen, which they probably already go to every day

they just want to get drunk and be a little bit happier for a sec

seemed to always happen at that arby's on hillsborough (as far back as 2000 or so for me).

it's just a function of shitty management that can't keep control of who comes into their store.

I will let beggars stay in my restaurant if they are the only people in there other my staff and only if they are spending money. Otherwise I make them leave.

what? their money spends just as well as anyone else's. And as long as they don't cost me money, why not? I only kick them out because they stink and drive off other customers.
If they can stay without bothering other people then I won't kick them out for a reasonable time anyways. Sometimes they come in and try to post up at a table and sleep all night. I'm running a 24 hour restaurant, not a free hotel.

^thats how i treat them when im working security

if i know hes a bum and he comes onto the patio, is not intoxicated, and just wants to sit down for a spell and aint bothering anyone and not soliciting, i let him or her hang around.

the second they ask for money or harass groups multiple times for a light THEN i ask them to leave. If i see them talkin to people i just make sure it is a genuine conversation and not starting to sound like a pitch

the only problem with that are the ones that havent taken their meds and/or are really fiendin for a hit, ive seen them enough on the streets to know when they havent taken meds. Their mood switches violently so I dont let them hang around at all because they

I would get hit up at the Kangaroo on Western all the time. I never give beggars money or the time of day, just a no and keep walking. Once I had this huge dude who was standing beside his car, respond with "What, you don't like black people?" That pissed me offed, I told him to go fuck himself.

I got hit up for some cash on Hboro St. one night back when I was in college. The guy said he hadnt eaten in 3 days.

I offered to buy the guy some chicken wings from the restaurant we were in front of. We bought him wings, and then walked across the street. We proceeded to watch him walk back inside the restaurant and try to RETURN THE DAMN WINGS. After a little arguing, they didnt let him return them, and he walked away. We walked back in to confirm that was what just happened.
