need gift idea for 7 year old boy. Would love to get him something "classic" (read: was around and awesome when we were kids) that he wouldn't think of himself or that his friends probably don't have (unless they're awesome). Less than $50.

Like Gak or Moon Shoes, but better.

Find him a big wheel. When he thinks it's lame, teach him to drift it.

get him a "ball-in-a-cup"

Mexico's Favorite Toy For over 1000 years!
The objective is to catch the ball in the cup.
No need to worry if you miss, as the ball is attached to a string that is attached to the cup!
Storage is as easy as catching a ball in a cup!

^ yup. I have a 7 and a 9 year old and my boys have a dozen or so nerf guns/bows/disc shooters of different varieties. New guns still get the best reactions at birthday and christmas time

They are way cooler than when I was a kid and pretty affordable for gifts. You can't go wrong.

I'll third the Super Soaker. You should be able to get a killer one for $50 that he can wreck his friends with.

That Pogo Ball commercial brings back memories.

Spirograph

but be VERY careful which version you get. several years ago, there was a "new" version which absolutely sucked. Do not get that one.

Now they've brought back the original design in a small tin box. It's called "Spirograph Design Tin Set" and costs $15. Great for a 7-year old. as a parent of a 8 year old, we have way too many nerf guns and super soakers. don't fall for the hype.

Aww, man, I was trying to think of the spirograph, but I couldn't remember what it was called.

The other links on that Amazon page reminded me that Ravensburger always had the best stuff:

http://www.ravensburger.com/us/start/index.html

For starters, the kid is definitely gonna need a copy of Labyrinth if he doesn't have it already.

first ask the parents if you can give him a Nerf gun
some parents don't want their children playing with the likenesses of death machines

then, once you have the okay
give the boy a gun so he doesn't turn gay

If the parents don't want him to have a nerf gun, they aren't fit to have children. You should kidnap him and raise him as your own for his birthday present.

K'Nex were new when I was 7, and they're still around and now come with pieces that interface with LEGO

K'Nex are too temperamental for a seven year old to put together without getting frustrated. Legos are much more fun.

microscope srsly. my brother had this one transformer named perceptor i think. well he wasalso a microscope and i played with him as a microscope, not a robot. then i got a better microscope and a telescope, etc. if i had a kid i would have stuff like that and a library of great textbooks full of pictures and explore the world.
