Dunno where to post this, mods just move it wherever you want...

"The Club Guy" (his name is Curtis) has a small shop on Penny Rd right across the street from Knightsplay (par 3 course). The man loves to help people play better golf, and man does it show. Handed me his card and said to spread the word... so I am...

http://www.clubguygolf.com/

Let me make this simple - If you need advice on anything golf related, trust me, SEE THIS GUY. Went to see him three times in the past year, and each time I thanked God he did.

Here's the rundown...

First visit

- He got my swing back on track (total disaster beforehand) - he charges $1.50 per minute for impromptu lessons. IMHO he outa charge about $10-20 per minute, but for the sake of not going broke I didn't tell him that.
- He pointed how bad my clubs were for me. The grips were worn & too damn small, so I was gripping the club too hard. The clubs themselves had uber light shafts (standard for most sets you buy off the rack), which was a terrible match for me considering that I swing too hard as it is.
- Told me to ditch my sand and gap wedges for the same reason - uber light shaft. He also asked if I liked my 60 degree wedge. I said "yeah I hit it much better than my other ones, why?", and he says "I expected that, since that's the only one that has a heavy shaft."
He gave me specific instructions on what clubs to buy AND where to find good used clubs. Found a perfect used set in good condition at Golfsmith for about 1/4 the price of new ones.
- Dropped off the "new" clubs so he good re-grip them with oversize grips that fit my hands.

Second visit (next day)

- Picked up the re-gripped clubs.
- Another impromptu lesson (~10 minutes).
- Looked at his collection of used wedges, picked up a pair of used ones with the heavy shafts I needed for dirt cheap.

Third visit (next year)

- Another impromptu lesson (~15 minutes), fixed my horrendously bad alignment issues in about 5.
- He noticed my pitching wedge was bent (i.e. shaft curved inward slightly). He straightened it out as I was warming up (at the hitting station).
- That's when he noticed my bag was sagging under it's own weight (i.e. needed to be replaced BAD). Bought yet another used item - a used bag for $50 (sells new for $250), thus saving the rest of my clubs from a similar fate.
- Went to the golf range afterward and was smashing the range balls like they owed me money.

Recap...

- Fixed my alignment issues (twice)
- Helped me find grips that fit my hands, a set of clubs, 2 wedges, and a bag that actually suited me at a fraction of the cost.
- Got rid of my slice for good, replacing it with a sweeping draw that most pros today use.

If you play golf, you should see this guy. Period. You have no excuse. None.

You can thank me later.

There is so much nonsensical information in that post

Most iron sets off the rack are going to have some sort of True Temper steel shaft that isn't even close to "uber light".

I also highly doubt you swing too hard as well, since almost all amateurs' swing speeds are between 90-110 mph while the tour pro has about 25 mph extra on their swing. No way you are close to sniffing 130 mph.

Quote :
"Told me to ditch my sand and gap wedges for the same reason - uber light shaft."

There isn't a single person that knows the game that would advise a novice golfer to ditch their sand wedge based on a shaft. The game is mostly played inside of 100 yards and the sand wedge is absolutely crucial around the green. Outside of the putter, it might be the most important club in the bag. You should be making best friends with that club as a beginner.

Golfsmith sucks. I'd love to hear what clubs you ended up with based on his recommendation.

Sagging under its own weight? How heavy is this bag? The very top of the line baller stand bags cost less than $200. Did he sell you a staff bag like the pros carry?

Quote :

If you've got bad enough problems with the fundamentals of the game (like lining up correctly) that you need the advice from others to correct it, the weight of a shaft should be something that you should never consider. Scratch golfers don't even get caught up in that stuff.

Quote :

That's a common misconception about tour players. Most pros actually play power cuts unless they have to play something else. It's an infinitely easier shot to hit and control under a lot of pressure, and the cut spin/trajectory helps land the ball softer on the green.

tl;dr This guy has pumped you with a pile of bullshit while counting your dollars

Curtis the "club guy" Colvin is for real.

I paid 5$/iron 3-lw. He will fix lie/loft anytime for remainder of life of clubs for free.

Usually he gives a free teaching session. Guy truly loves helping golf games.

He didn't say his swing speed was too high for the shafts, but that he was swinging too hard, and didn't need light/old man (i interpret as graphite) shafts

Who would want graphite shafted wedges? That's probably what he means by uber-light shafts.

I disagree. It's a decent place to buy used clubs.

Scratch golfers don't take shaft weight and flex into account when purchasing clubs? Really?

^ Yeah, he rant was bullshit, but I figure most people that know enough about golf just laughed about most of those comments, especially about shaft weight and flex.

How is there not a correlation between swing speed and swinging too hard? Pretty much every amateur could stand to swing harder than they do right now. Club head speed is everything. No way he is swinging too hard, he just doesn't have a great swing yet and doesn't make solid contact at that speed.

Also, he doesn't mention graphite a single place in that post. He DOES mention that most sets off the rack are "uber light" which you apparently interpret as graphite, but that's not even true. Most sets off the rack don't have graphite.

Quote :

Who said anything about graphite other than you again? In 30 years of playing golf I've never seen a graphite shafted sand wedge.

Quote :

You pay the mark-up on the used club if you go through a golf store. Plenty of cheaper ways to buy direct in the golf market.

Quote :
"Is that not what he did?"

How come you conveniently cut off the end of my statement where the comma is located? If I saw a guy that can't even line up right, but then was concerned about that extra 10 grams in his iron shaft, there wouldn't be a big enough rolleyes suitable for that situation.

Quote :
"Scratch golfers don't take shaft weight and flex into account when purchasing clubs? Really?"

Where did a say anything about flex again? Show me. I could poll 15 scratch golfers at my club and I would wager MAYBE 2 could give me an answer as to how much their shafts weigh.

Quote :

I'm guessing you aren't a math major. He said it was a $1.50 a minute, or $90/hour for an impromptu lesson from a dude off the street that's not even a licensed instructor by the PGA of America. You wouldn't pay that much from somebody that actually knew how to properly teach the game.

Golfsmith is absolutely terrible. You can get used clubs in multiple locations, that are in better condition, for cheaper prices than their used clubs. Everything in there is jacked up in prices. Hell, their new clubs are more expensive than you can buy new clubs at Dicks Sporting Goods.
