Historically the NCAA cares a lot more about selling shoes than 5 dozen no show classes that keep athletes eligible who go on to play for national championship teams

I get that. Its worth looking into... But I don't think its as damning as the rentals. I can think of logical explanations for the shoes tweets. Hence, I wouldn't hold my breath.

A link I want to know if it exists: fats and UNC football. I'd love to find one athlete that got a car from him in the sport they were previously nailed, just to serve as a nice bridge.

The way I see it, it has nothing to do with NCAA compliance anyway. NCAA will not do shit to UNC, they have proven that with the academic scandal. What it comes down to is image. Image is the reason they get good recruits. Recruits are the reason Roy is able to win. Winning is how they are able to get tons of unqualified idiots to apply. Rejecting them is how they keep their academic rating high. This was acknowledged by UNC officials when they asked for permission to grant Roy a salary exception from the Rams Club coffers. I dont remember the exact language, but it went something like "continued success in backetball is important to keep application/enrollment rates high".

It comes down to free throws. Every time PJ shoots one, everyone behind the basket is going to put on skull caps and toss up gang signs. When he shoots, they are going to clutch their chests and fall down. The cameron crazies will probably have blood capsules. They will make sideways gangsta finger guns and have posters saying "hey peej, lemme get a dime when the games over". Every time he gets the ball on the perimeter they are going to chant "pass it to the left!" It is going to be on ESPN. Everyone watching TV is going to see it. Dickie V is going to have to explain it to the people watching who didnt follow the scandal. It isn't going away now. They waited. They hoped, but it aint going away.

Somebody at UNC, maybe Roy, has to decide if winning is worth the damage to UNC's reputation. Somebody has to decide if he is good enough to put up with. They have to look at the bench and find the points from somebody else. They have to wonder what happens if he gets in trouble again, if it's even worse next time. They have to make a decision. Based upon their fans, their alums, and their coach, my guess is they keep PJ on the team and make him sit out for 1-2 totally irrelevant, out of conferance games. My money says that when it's time to show their true colors, they take the low road.

Meanwhile, Staats Battle rides the Wolfline. :-)

Just a summarization of these two threads could be made into "Personal Fouls 2".

Only this time it would be accurate.

Ugh, still find it sad/funny that people really think UNC is going to get punished by this. UNC's NCAA Compliance "expert" they hired basically came out and point out why this wouldn't be an NCAA compliance issue and how little evidence they would have.

This is going to be, can we throw enough dirt and have enough stick to the point UNC feels PJ has to go(it would take a lot since he's their best player this season and Roy knows it), or will Roy take the easy road and suspend him for 5-6 non-conference games early in the season and then be done with it.

And if you really think UNC or Roy care what opposing fans cheer/do during FT shooting, you're kidding yourself, haha.

"CHAPEL HILL - University of North Carolina Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham has issued the following statement:
"The athletic department compliance staff and I are fully aware of recent media accounts related to our men's basketball team. We take these matters very seriously and are looking into these reports and the inferences they contain with all due diligence. It is my practice not to comment on the individuals involved or the details surrounding these reports until we have sufficient understanding of the facts involved. We are still gathering information, learning information from other sources, and we will not comment until we have a strong grasp of each individual situation. Where the facts show mistakes in judgment and/or actions, Coach (Roy) Williams will take and I will support the appropriate disciplinary measures.
"The integrity of the University of North Carolina is of paramount concern to all of us and is the principle on which Coach Williams and the athletic department operate each and every day. The most responsible course of action, however, is to withhold judgment and comment until we are confident we have the facts to do so. I appreciate everyone's understanding of that and we will bring these matters to resolution as soon as possible.""

That's honestly one of my favorite quotes ever.

Its gotta be tough for UNC's PR team to figure out what to do when this convicted felon who is connected to at least half of their basketball team keeps talking like this.

Unbelievable that neither UNC nor the NCAA have approached Thomas so far. Now that he's lawyered up, there's no way they'll get anything out of him. And that allows UNC to skate just like Duke did with the jeweler case

I swear I hope he does sue.

That gives the media the opportunity for discovery which will in turn yield all the info they have been trying to get for the past week.

Theres still the agent aspect as well as the shoe selling as well as the dental foundation.

Lots of prongs to this that are still wide open

And here is where everything starts to clam up and disappear. No additional charges probably means nothing added for the gun or intent to sell. Fats has lawyered up. NCAA will come in and require PJ to sit 3 games and pay back and it will all be gone

Here we have our naive athletic department monitoring players' tweets, self reporting violations, having class checkers check if athletes attend classes.

The law doesn't apply to Duke, UNC, Kansas and Kentucky

I'm sure the same booster who is channeling money to fatts will be picking up the tab on legal fees as well.

It will be very telling in the way unc ultimately handles this. I'm sure this scheme has been in place for many players (rentals cars and middle-men). They can't risk kicking Hairston off the team and him going public or running his mouth. If they kick him off then it wil probably mean someone coughed up enough cash to keep him quiet.

My guess, is there is an insinuation that if fats sues any party for defamation/libel/slander, the involved parties will have the right to subpoena relevant records to back up their claims. Presumably, they could look at his credit card statements to see transactions with rental agencies, look at rental agency records, etc.

Then, the courts will compel discovery.

The media always starts off their reports and story teasers about this Hairston situation in the exact same way:

Quote :
"Convicted felon [whatever] [whatever] [whatever]"

See:
http://www.wralsportsfan.com/durham-man-denies-providing-improper-benefits-to-hairston/12644665/

As an example. I find that interesting. They want you to know first and foremost about the convicted felon. The news is about new info regarding more vehicles and parking tickets, the story will lead off "Convicted felon..." without fail. Couple that with the mj they found in the car and if I had to guess the "boosters" who are channeling money to Fats are "people that want to buy pot."

I don't know anything about the dentist angle or whatever but the circumstances of the initial arrest and the way these stories are being reported lead one to believe that the UNC basketball program has received impermissible benefits from money obtained by dealing drugs.

the parking tickets stuff is ridiculous...someone at the university is just sweeping these under the rug for football and bball players.

I couldn't even register for classes if I had outstanding parking ticket or if I forgot to bring back a damn PE shirt.
