This will tell you how much faith I have in this franchise:
I didn't know anything about the draft or any of the players that were in it and I didn't pay attention to it at all today. But I knew the reactions would be this way when I signed on here today. 6/30/2013 8:06:47 PM |
Vulcan91 All American 13893 Posts user info edit post |
The reactions will be this way no matter what. Everyone gets some guy in their head that they want their team to draft (even though they probably don't know anything about 99% of the players and the only thing they know about that particular guy is something they read on some blog) and when it doesn't happen they go ballistic. I've been guilty of it myself. 6/30/2013 8:22:46 PM |

http://nhlwhiteboard.blogspot.ca/2013/03/shift-stalker-andrej-sekera.html
Quote : | "Conclusion For the reasons I've detailed above, it's pretty clear that Sekera is quite a good defender. He may be underrated by the casual fan, but given a more discerning look, it becomes quite clear he possesses a number of positive qualities and is quite valuable. It was only a sample of two games for viewing, to be sure, but the eye test seemed to reflect that he's relied upon heavily at even-strength and trusted to do a lot of the hardest work for his team in the defensive zone (as the numbers would indicate). Defending a lead against the Rangers in the final few minutes, Coach Rolston had Sekera out for a marathon 2:31 shift in a 5v6 situation. His skating and defensive instincts are excellent and smooth, and his offensive instincts are a plus for his position as a whole.
Sekera is not going to be a #1 defenseman playing 30 minutes a night on the powerplay and penalty kill, but he is most certainly a top-4 defenseman on any team — likely a second-pairing or #3 on a truly good team. He's going to have the odd brain cramp that might glare for a bit, but the overall long run contribution will certainly outweigh that. For a guy with his tools, it's easy to be left wanting more from the offensive side, but he should be viewed as what he is. Non-physical defensemen (especially without much offense) that go through bad spells (as every player in the league will) can get a bad rap because their contributions aren't as overt as a player that hits and fights and bleeds — good ol' Western Canadian boys with heart and character, and all that.
His contract runs through 2014-15 with a cap hit of $2.75M, which is a great contract for the time being. By the time he hits UFA, I'd probably be pretty comfortable with him in the $3.5M-$5M range. Sekera is part of a newer class of defender — he possesses instincts, sense and reaction time that can't really be taught. Similar to players like Paul Martin or Dennis Seidenberg, it is an emerging "type" of defender that will and should be valued by teams — ones that can advance the puck and keep it out of their own zone as much as possible in order to increase their team's possession time. It's a departure from the archetype of big, bruising defenders that clear the front of the net without mercy and throw thunderous hip checks along the boards.
Currently, if you were trading from a position of strength (as you'd always like to, naturally), or in position for contention, acquiring Sekera would be a terrific move for almost any team in the league — especially with those cost-controlled years remaining on his deal. If you're to keep him on your radar with a longer view on things, he's a viable UFA option to keep an eye on if his level of play is maintained or progresses." |

yep, trading the 35th overall pick in one of the deepest draft ever, great move by JR. Just like last year we had to include Brian Duomolin in the Staal trade. No wonder why our farm system sucks ass. 6/30/2013 9:44:24 PM |

And if sakera pans out and is decently competent, then what? Bitch some more?
Nobody's going to be happy, its a trade off, get a piece for now, or draft someone that will take years to develop. Lest you forget we have dick all for players that worked their way up from the AHL.
Is the development system a drafting issue? I'm not sure that's the case. To an extent, its possible. But 3 other teams took a chance on boychuk, because they had good enough scouting material on him, then they realized he sucks. Development is something we're terrible at, and always have been. I'd focus my anger there, personally. 6/30/2013 10:48:19 PM |
IS250tim All American 943 Posts user info edit post |
From what I read on Duomolin recently he seemed to have taken a step back this past season, so I wouldn't worry yet. This is a deal that will take about 3 years to more fully know it's value (so 2 more to go). McBain and the 2nd for Sekera while potentially a slight over payment, you do. It's first addition by subtraction, move a PMD for one who is better defensively (something we needed). Second, the real dollars paid to Sekera are comparable to McBain, so Salary is a wash. Do I wish it was a 3rd so we could've drafted the goalie of the future, yeah, but you have to give to get. The defense market this summer is pathetic when Ryan Whitney is basically the cream of the crop. 7/1/2013 12:18:41 PM |

He has been in the past and has the potential to be again, and at $700k for one year it's a god damn great gamble. You are literally the first person I have seen today to have anything negative to say about this signing. It's basically a no-lose move.

This just seems like another band-aid attempt by the Canes. I don't have anything personal against this guy and sure, he COULD have role on the team if he stays healthy, but it seems like the Hurricanes are determined not to establish a legitimate defense group with signings like this.
Quote : | "Komisarek's final year of his five-year, $22.5-million deal will not count against the Leafs' salary cap. The 31-year-old defenseman sustained several injuries during his time with the Leafs and failed to live up to lofty expectations after inking a deal with the team just prior to the 2009-10 campaign.
Thefirst-round pick (No. 7) of the Montreal Canadiens in 2001 has 14 goals and 77 points in 519 career regular-season games with the Canadiens and Leafs. The native of West Islip, N.Y., was limited to four games for the Maple Leafs this past season while dealing with injuries." |

Many of those games he missed were not because of health, but because of him being scratched by the Leafs and eventually waived to the minors thanks to his $4.5 million cap hit. He's another one of those guys who got caught in the Toronto media circus, and how many times have we seen once great players get out of that pressure cooker and find some of their old form again? Not saying he will, but 700k is damn near league minimum.
Our defense going into this season is significantly better than last year.
Pitkanen Faulk Sekera Gleason Harrison Komisarek Murphy Bellemore
Obviously defense is not going to be the strength of the team; the money is being put into the forwards, but that group has some potential. Murphy is the x-factor; he could be legit, but there's not as much pressure now with Komisarek added.
I'm just not sure what else can realistically be done to improve the defense other than a blockbuster trade like sending Skinner to someone for a great d-man, which I'm not necessarily against, but it would be opening one hole to fill another.

Some could call it a band-aid move, but it's a damn smart signing. A zero risk move, with a lot of potential. Only time will tell.
In other news, Dan Ellis to the Stars
People get so wrapped up in this big day of free agency. I'd much rather the Canes make this move than throw $4 million at a $2 million, which happens every year. If he comes in a plays smart, solid, physical D, it's a win.

While I agree that our defense has improved....slightly, I still think we are a long ways away from being able to be a playoff contender. Defense wins championships... PERIOD. Rutherford doesn't seem to understand that concept.
Quote : | "Our defense going into this season is significantly better than last year.
Pitkanen Faulk Sekera Gleason Harrison Komisarek Murphy Bellemore" |
Here's how I see that list:
Pitkanen - overrated as fuck, lazy, and doesn't make good decisions most of the time. Faulk - great young player who is going to be more of a legit defender as he gets stronger Sekera - veteran defenseman and an upgrade on McBain Gleason - I love Tim Gleason. He's physical and somewhat of a small enforcer but cannot contribute AT ALL offensively. Harrison - veteran player becoming better and more well rounded each year but is not a long term option for a top 4 defenseman (if you consider him one now) Komisarek - injury prone defenseman that could be good Murphy - unknown Bellemore - unknown
Most of these guys are not top 4 defenders on 75% of the NHL teams.
