I work in an Operations Center with 3 coworkers. They are all lined up on the other side of the room in semi-cubes, while I have the biggest one all to myself on the other side of the room. Being on the other side I have total privacy from them and people entering the room. I get along with all of them great and would not give up any of my pay to have an office to myself.

I have my own office, being able to sit on a couch to read something has a real value to me. At one of my clients I have to use an open concept workspace and its awful. I'd probably need at least $10k to move to a cubicle and would do everything I could to avoid moving to an open concept. ($10k in addition to whatever it would take to male me want to move in general)

I have a plain office that I share with one other guy. Just two desks put in a room thats 11x11. But we are out visiting job sites on our own a good portion of the day so most of the time we aren't in the office at the same time. So I really like this setup.

My last job had me in a cube (when I wasn't out visiting job sites) in a room with 6 total cubes plus the receptionist in one big room. I hate having to listen to people talk on the phone, and I don't really care to have other people listening in on my phone calls so I hated this setup. I definitely love my peace and quiet when I'm in the office. I would rather sit on a stool at a work bench out in a warehouse if it gave me the ability to be alone than be in a open concept or cube place.

So while I don't know how much I would give up to stay in an office, I do know that if they ever tried to put me in a cube, I would at least put my feelers out for a new job. Or at the very least, start trying to do any office work I could out in the field to avoid coming in.

I recently had to sit in a cube again temporarily for 3 weeks while I moved between offices.

I've been in a couple of arrangements... I shared a small office with one other person, I didn't like that, there wasn't any specific background noise to drown out keyboard clicks, or whatever else of the other person. I'd rather be in a cube than a shared office.

I've been in a large room with about six people. I hated this one the most, if only because one guy had tinnitus and would play music to compensate.... But couldnt tolerate headphones of any kind. So I got to listen to his music all day. Plus a lot of people came and went through that area.

I've also been in an open office cube farm. That didn't bother me as much, there were times when the background talking got loud, but I could use headphones and deal with it. The worst was conference calls, with two people around one desk phone. Fuck that. I could survive in this environment and at times liked it, but there would need to be more conference rooms for phone calls.

My current setup is 6 of us in a segregated area... We do get a little through traffic, but its not terrible. Shit shooting sessions involve everyone,usually, and outside of that its fairly quiet.

I don't think I would pay anything to move into an office, and I don't think I'd be intimidated by a move from office to cube farm... But I've never had my own.

My office is a big room with 2 other dudes. I have a huge wraparound desk, with so many drawers and overhead cabinets that I couldn't possibly use all the space.

I like sharing an office...keeps me entertained.

Even if I was indifferent, I sure as hell wouldn't sacrifice a cent of pay for my own office.


Plus, most of my work isn't done sitting at my desk, anyway. I'm either flying (to include briefing and debriefing) or lecturing for the bulk of my time.

No cubicles though, just desks in little 4 person islands that can be easily rolled around depending on the project. I'm absolutely loving it

100% travel so my work area depends on the client....have had everything from sharing a tiny grey cube to c-suite offices and every type of conference room in between

If I need to go do internal stuff at a local location I just reserve space in one of those open area setups

Would rather work from home than have a full office unless it was for a position that warranted meeting space and admin

Does anyone else work in a full open concept office? I'm curious how other people deal with it. A coworker who is really unhappy with losing his cube decorated is storage cubby like a high school locker, it got a lot of laughs. (for those unaware, full open concept has no assigned work stations just identical 4-person tables with laptop stands and monitors that any person can sit at. Since you don't have a work area you have to keep all your stuff in an assigned cubby or drawer like you were a kid in school.)

this! i hate being able to hear people on the phone and have them listen in on me. I have my own office, but our inside team is small. there are only 5 of us. so i know what the other people are usually up to. I play music in my office which is a must for me and it helps drown out my and their phone calls.

i would take a cube space for a bit more money. especially if it had a good sound masking system. a cube space usually equals a larger office with more employees which might be a nice change of pace for me since i see the same 4 faces each day.

but to hell with an full open concept. i would burn a place like that to the ground.

I shared an office in my first job out of college, but that was only because I was traveling 85% of the time and did not really need an office. Ever since I moved on from that job, I've had a good salary and my own office with a door, etc.

I would gladly give that up for more money if I had to share space with more co-workers, but I'm guessing more money or a promotion usually leads to more solitary confinement.

I have my own office. I would trade maybe $3k/yr. to have one with a window though. I feel like having sunlight in a room would make me feel a lot better. Also I wish my office was set up differently so people can't just come in and immediately see what's on my screen.

I had mine set up that way, but I moved my computer/monitors so I wouldn't have that problem. But I have the "luxury" of just one office mate and an L-shaped desk.

Everyone where I work has their own office or shares with another person (I share with someone). I never realized the potential pitfalls of this until I experienced it. Everyone holes up in their office with their door closed and it's like a god damn ghost town around here 95% of the time. There are days when the guy I share my office with is the only person I interact with. I will welcome my next job, which will almost certainly be more of an open cube format.

I don't really have that much interest in an office. If I have reasonable "privacy" in a cubicle I'm happy. The big thing I hate is being in a cube where the layout is such that my back is to anyone walking up on me. But other than that, I typically like being around other people vs. holed up in a separate office as long as I have a little personal space.

My seating arrangement right now is a little too much "lack of privacy" for me (8 people in a single-wide trailer) for long term but I'm getting paid enough to makeup for it. I'm just glad this arrangement is relatively short term in that regard.

In nearly 15 years at Cisco, I've had cubicles, a shared work-table type environment (when i was a co-op/labrat/cable-monkey), an office, and now a home-office since i telecommute full-time.

Ultimately, when it comes to productivity, I never found any of the former (cubicle/office/worktable) setups to be better than the others. In my opinion, a grown-ass adult should be pretty adaptable to a variety of set-ups. I'm far more productive working from home, but only because there's no metaphorical water-cooler to shoot the shit with. I'm overly social, and probably wasted a couple of hours a day talking to people.

Beyond that, I certainly have the natural preference for an office because it makes me feel more important, and I could get away with NSFW TWW/reddit breaks more easily, but other than that, it was never a big deal. I wouldn't trade a penny of salary for an office (assuming i was working at a corporate location).

This is one thing that would bother me a lot. I guess I've been lucky in that our cube configurations allowed for not having your back to the entrance of the cube.

I love my work environment. Work from home, but I have a cube as well. I go in to the office 2 to 3 days a week, unless I'm traveling and working remotely.

If I had to physically be in an office most days, I'd want at least a 50k increase.

I'm currently working mostly out of my truck, with a construction trailer serving as my second office. I got one half of the construction trailer to myself and share the other half with three people, but I physically removed my door to make working with the others easier. It's like a cheap cubicle that attracts tornadoes, but I love the setup.

I'm about to transition to a new office building with 6 nice rooms and no employees to put in them yet. I think I'm going to miss the trailer.

The office I had before I left for construction was nice, but the building got sold at some point while I was gone. I have an office at the new building in which I've probably spent a combined 3 hours over the last year, so I have no opinion of it.

the only thing that I am really going to miss is being able to shut the fucking door when I needed to do something important, my door was closed maybe 10% of the time, but when it was even my boss knew not to open it

(also led to some pretty epic naps on holiday workdays, who the fuck makes you work thanksgiving day and Christmas day)
