^^^^^ Eh, the odds are overwhelming that there's nothing nefarious going on when the doorbell rings. I'm not answering the door every time bearing a long gun, hahaha. That's a little nutty.

Especially in my neighborhood--it's almost always one of the neighborhood girls wanting to play with my daughter, or an older gentleman with cancer who lives across the street needing help to move or lift something. Either that or the UPS/FedEx man who's already walking back to his truck after leaving a package at the door.

...but there's pretty much no cost in slipping a handgun into my pocket (or under a jacket in cooler weather) for the off chance that it's needed.


...and there is no fucking way you're coming inside if I don't know you. I'd call 911, I'd ask you to step back into the yard, and then I'd place some clothes or a blanket outside, I'd open the garage door and let you hide in there (with the door into my house locked), I'd go get my AR-15 and be ready if your pimp or rapist or ex-boyfriend or husband or whomever showed up and tried to harm you again...but you're not coming in.

if i remember correctly, this couple also had a house in the middle of nowhere. i think it's a different story if you're in a subdivision, but if you are miles away from anyone then i can see how this type of thing would scare you, and you would not open the door.

In 2002 I drove my car into a gully in Caswell County around 2am. After climbing back up the embankment I walked towards literally the only artificial light I could see, which was prolly about 1/2 a mile away...it was this house in the middle of nowhere and I had to bang on their front door to get someone to answer. I was bruised, dirty, and totally expected to have the door answered with a gun in my face. They didn't let me in (and I didn't expect them to), but they also did not produce said firearm and did call 911 for me.

It's one of those things where you kinda know you're breaking social norms, but an emergency is what it is.
