Please tell me they at least got engaged or something. Sending an invitation that is literally saying "give us money" is pretty poor form, but if it's also celebrating some kind of milestone that normal people celebrate, it isn't quite as bad as if they just decided they wanted the cash. 7/17/2013 7:29:48 PM

yes this couple is getting engaged. I'm making the very safe assumption that this isn't replacing their wedding shower. if it did, then OK fine. but it won't.
I'm pretty sure that it basically means give the couple cash for their honeymoon or whatever. the invitation shows an airplane flying around the globe
at the very least, shower invitations (most of the time) aren't sent by the shower recipients. so they aren't fully to blame.
however, my sister-in-law is having (had? i don't even know) a "Gender reveal shower" for their third spawn. she "thought it would be cute and a way to show her appreciation for all her friends" wtf ever that means. this is her third child with my brother. at some point it's like changing socks. a shower for it at this point is a little ridiculous. and I'm assuming she'll also have a baby shower later on. fuck that, don't you already have the all the shit you need? especially so since they'll all 3 be girls.
just tired of all these gift giving occasions, and i'd love to see less. 7/17/2013 8:06:19 PM

I have usually seen the gender reveal showers, kitchen showers, lingerie showers and things like that to be replacements for the other ones. Or at least thrown by different people with different groups invited. There's a lot of politicking that goes into throwing showers for other people, so sometimes I think people end up having more than they really want to because they don't want to tell someone they can't host. But typically you don't invite the people to more than one of them for the same life event.
If they also have an engagement shower, I'm a little speechless.
My MOH is planning my wedding shower now, and I honestly hate that everyone will feel like they need to bring me a gift. I want to have it to play the silly games and eat cake, not to present whore. 7/17/2013 8:14:58 PM

^ It is weird and SAD that you are not in control of your own wedding and related activities.
It is your wedding, you do whateverTF you want, not what other people want. 7/17/2013 8:23:35 PM

When my gf's sister got engaged I went to at least 5 different related social functions.
Each was worse than the one before it and it all culminated in a miserable wedding.
There's no point to this story.

My wife is having a gender reviling party. That means the husbands or bfs of their invited female gets to go golfing with me. Might go to a baseball game

Huh? I do want a shower. What I don't want is for people to feel like they have to buy me something expensive in order to go to it. 7/17/2013 8:38:56 PM

we had a "reveal party" to find out the gender, but it wasn't a shower... we just had some food and family came over. We had the gender written in a card from the Dr and we all found out together and it was fun. (and it wasn't an excuse for people to bring gifts... in fact we made it clear it wasn't a "gift party")
most of these are ridiculous. 7/17/2013 9:08:54 PM
