I love Detroit. I love the people. I love the vibe. They have great local music, great local art, and great food. It's the only place up north with bbq that I approve of and I grew up in Eastern NC. The Lebanese / middle eastern food is to die for. I love how they have an actual vibrant punk music scene. I love how all the bars have stuff like free popcorn and cheap beers. People there are friendly and it's easy to meet people. Pretentious yuppies are rare. I love how you think you are seeing a bunch of fucking hipsters and then you realize that they are legit, blue collar, molson drinking, average Joes and they aren't snobby and shit and that's just how they dress.

Sure, parts of the city south of 9mile are ghetto and lots of industry has left, but that will change. The infrastructure is in place, well trained people are looking for jobs, taxes are low, and incentives abound. Things will get better when the economy improves. I agree that this is the result of the local government's inability to budget and I agree that we should pay attention to this example before we make the same mistakes at the federal level, but please don't condemn the whole damned city as a shithole, because it's not. Talk all the smack you want, but if you haven't been there you should go, just to check out the culture. There is a whole lot of fun to be had in Detroit, even now.
