Gang rape, the dark side of Egypt's protests http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/03/opinion/burleigh-rapes-tahrir-square/index.html
Quote : | "Egypt has always been a place where life for women is nasty and brutish, if not short. Last year, a UNICEF survey showed 91% of Egyptian women between the ages of 15-49 said they had to undergo female genital mutilation. The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality in May reported that 99.3% of Egyptian women interviewed said they had been subjected to some form of sexual violence. Rape victims almost never go to the hospital and certainly not the police. There are no medical protocols for rape, and police treat female victims as prostitutes." |

So yeah, if you are a woman, don't go to the Middle East, especially never as an unmarried/single woman.7/21/2013 3:24:43 PM |

I'm surprised the Norwegian Govt. didn't get her out of there, very quickly. Maybe it's b/c she was working for a Qatari company... so it makes it even more politically messy... I don't know. 7/21/2013 3:41:40 PM |

Pardoned. What is sad, is that had she not been a foreigner with a ton of support, she would have likely served that sentence. I am happy for her, but this doesn't change my feelings. 7/22/2013 11:01:18 AM |

Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, which are semi-autonomous and each has its own ruling family.
The main city in the emirate of Dubai is also called Dubai, and which basically is the only/main population center and what people are talking about when they say Dubai.
Steven, Abu Dhabi is 16 times bigger than Dubai in area.
I am glad she is free, but lol indeed to ^^
She is probably never going back there ever again, or even back to Qatar for that matter, even if she still had the job, because that could have easily happened in Qatar as well.

With these known cases, why would you go there?

In January 2010, a British woman told authorities she was raped by an employee at a Dubai hotel. She was charged with public intoxication and having sex outside of marriage.
An Australian woman reported in 2008 that she was drugged and gang-raped. She was convicted of having sex outside marriage and drinking alcohol, and she was sentenced to 11 months in prison." |

But she did drink and she did have sex and she did change her story.
I feel like it would have gone differently if she didn't claim rape then claim it was consensual. Unfortunately, the charges fit.
As for drinking being illegal, I think they have bars cause visitors and non Muslims can drink with a liquor permit... but most people don't get them, and none of the places ask (from what I've heard.. grain of salt) 4/22/2024 10:01:43 AM |
