Research Triangle Park vs. Silicon Valley
Many people compare Research Triangle Park to Silicon Valley, with good reason. This page details the similarities and differences between the two regions.

Similarities

Weather

Both RTP and Silicon Valley have good weather, where it's normal to have sunny days. But, the summer is quite different between the two regions. In late July and August, the weather in RTP is extremely hot and humid. In Silicon Valley, the summers are not too hot - many apartments and homes don't even have air conditioning.

Demographics

Many people from the North (Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York) migrate to Raleigh-Durham because of the job market. Similarly, many people in Silicon Valley have migrated from the East coast.

Both regions have by notable universities. RTP has Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University. Silicon Valley has Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley.

Neighborhoods

Cary is like Palo Alto. Both areas have a wealthy population, good school districts, and low levels of crime.

Durham is like Oakland. They are both suffer from high crime rates.

Chapel Hill is like Berkeley. Both are liberal university towns.

There is no equivalent to San Francisco.

Industries

Both have a high concentration of high tech workers

Burgers

Each region seems to have popular local burger joints. RTP has Cook Out. Silicon Valley has In-N-Out.

Differences

Housing

Housing in RTP is much cheaper than Silicon Valley. A house in Silicon Valley costs about ten times more than a similar house in RTP. Many people in California choose to relocate because of the housing costs.

Population Size

Silicon Valley is part of the San Francisco Bay Area, which has 7.15 million people. RTP is part of the Research Triangle, which has 1.74 million people.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Silicon Valley has a much deeper entrepreneurial spirit than RTP.

Cary is NOTHING like Palo Alto

If anything Palo Alto is more similar to Chapel Hill, but that's not even a close comparison. Chapel Hill is absolutely nothing like Berkeley, aside from having a university campus in its city limits.

And LOL at the Durham/Oakland comparison. Durham doesn't have $10M homes in the hills that overlook the SF Bay like Oakland does. The ghetto dangerous parts of Oakland are also much more violent and dangerous than pretty much anywhere in Durham.

This isn't true either. Most houses in SV start at around $600k, but for larger ones they can be in the $1M range. Nice houses in RTP can easily go for $500k +. Not exactly 10x

California has close to 40 million people, most of whom live either in the greater Los Angeles area or the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a HUGE state with more types of ecosystems than any of the lower 48 states. There are parts of it that are rural, but most people think of CA being very crowded and urban since that's where the majority of people live.

California is nothing really like the East coast's suburbs. No clue where you got that idea from. Have you been to CA, shoot?

Raleigh has got to get a monorail at least going out to RTP. I'm pretty sick of spending 1-1.5 hours in traffic every day just getting from Six Forks to Davis Dr.

Or get a three lane expressway like they have in Chicago where the middle lane goes to RTP in the mornings and out of RTP in the afternoons.

South Saunders to Airport Blvd at 730am and 5pm usually takes me 25-30 min at most (including off highway driving). Either you're doing it wrong or traffic on 440 and Six Forks is the devil. Either way, a monorail to RTP or a middle HOV lane on 40 won't help you.

I spent pretty much every summer here since 2008. This summer is way cooler than b4 IMO.
