what's the ticket for?

when I got a ticket for public consumption of alcohol in NYC I just appeared myself and it was easy
got a $25 fine (minimum) because the judge liked what I was drinking (Baltic Thunder from Victory)

That sounds like a civil fine which is just money...in NC city ordinance violations are misdemeanors and go on your criminal record, ability to get a job, and can effect what happens if you get in trouble again. It is well worth it to fight any ticket you get so you do not have to answer for it later when trying to get a job or apartment.

Ahahaha @ the uptown comment. Yes. I finished the beer, tossed it, and the cops showed up a couple of minutes later saying they saw me consuming it. I told them they had no proof and that I was just drinking a coke. They went through the trash and pulled the beer out. Told them it wasn't mine. I'm going to plead not guilty.

wow that's a really stupid ticket and a huge waste of public resources

the cops that wrote me my ticket apologized and explained that the law prohibiting drinking in a park wasn't really meant for me - they commented that they thought I would probably recycle the damn bottle and not smash it all over the monkey bars like most of the losers they write tickets to

the cops also commented on our beer choices (I got busted with the producer of a web series about beer after a video shoot with the Victory rep)

Probably, but the judge could even waive those. If the cop shows, just get a continuance. There's always the chance that the cop that pulled you will be there for another case. Plan to take the whole day off just in case, because if you plead not guilty it will be after recess before they even hear it.

I had the same sorta thing happen to me in Wilmington a couple summers ago. Walked off of the outside smoking section at a bar with a beer still in hand and was promptly directed to a police cruiser. I remember thinking that the cop would see my clean record and let me leave or something. FUCK NO. $200+ in court fees later I went home at the expense of my prayer for judgment.

I haven't had any other brushes with the law since, however I'd like to think of my PFJ as something to hang on to. oh well

I am thinking of using my prayer for judgement, although I'd rather get it dismissed (obviously). I haven't paid a lawyer yet, but I am a court n00b and will probably fuck things up with matters in my hands. Getting a second opinion from a local lawyer tomorrow, and I have a local detective working on getting it thrown out, as he knows a Federal Marshall in Charlotte. The thing is, the people who wrote the ticket weren't city cops, they are some outsourced police company hired by the city that still has jurisdiction. His guys in Charlotte have no ties with this company.

wonder if that means they'd be less likely to show up in court for your court appearance...you have the right to face your accusers, and if they don't show up, it should be easy to get it dismissed...at least with a lawyer

uhh, i mean its pretty obvious i did it. i didnt consume the beer AT the train station. when i arrived there i had the empty can and threw it out. the only thing i said on here is that i told the cops it was a coke can, which i later recanted and told them it was my beer can but didnt consume it there. which is true. i guess in the original post i should have said on the way but didnt think it was that big of a deal, which its not.

She and I were really tight back in 1999-2000 when I had two DWIs. When I got my second one (I was out of control then ) I came to her office all upset and she said "Hey man, chill the fuck out, you need a drink?" while pointing to the liquor cabinet in her office.

She got me out of 2 DWIs in less than 8 months. The first one she worked the NC State Trooper and he admitted he failed to follow protocol.

The second one- she continued the case so many times, finally due to the Rae Carruth trial, the Charlotte cop was late and Mary got the judge to dismiss the case.

She had me hiding in the men's bathroom stalls one time in the courthouse.

I didn't get a lawyer for my possession ticket from a Hillsborough St Hike in '04. I showed up at the court and they offered me to go to a drug rehabilitation class to have it expunged from my record. The class was 2 days on the weekend with all of my friends that got tickets too (although the rest of the class were drug addicts and dealers). I had to pay a couple hundred for the class and the court fees and nothing is on my record now.
