n00b question

I'm noticing that GIF is about 3.2 MB

I understand that quality is variable and all that, but

I download FLV files occasionally which have pretty decent quality, and are maybe 1 minute long (for an example) and are no more than 3.2 MB or in that vicinity

is it because of the dimensions of the video file?

or it is that some people don't know how to correctly compress GIFs?

it doesn't make sense to me how some GIFs are ridiculously huge (relatively speaking) in comparison to some videos

I don't feel like googling it, so somebody educate me on this matter

its got a lot of stills to make it that smoothly animated and each frame is hq, and large size so it is a big file
