that cheap fakey gold/brass stuff (like the picture) definitely started dying out late 90s, although gold toned metals have been making a huge comeback the past few years. This is especially true of higher quality brass fixtures (and even moreso of quality, vintage brass fixtures).

When used well (and not just throwing some cheap gold-look faucet into any old room) I think it looks really good. Anything done without context and purely done because it's popular or cheap looks dated quickly. There are some awesome gold light fixtures out there, but there are tens of thousands of cheap gold/brass-looking fixtures that are builder-special that look absolutely terrible.

In the right context, warm-toned metals can still look fantastic.

Same thing goes for wallpaper. Wallpaper itself still looks great - patterns just goes "out of style" much quicker than colors do so you better be prepared to change wallpaper more frequently if you're someone who is worried about what's "in". The reason most wallpaper looks dated is because the pattern and color combo is dated.
