and after watching that video... i hope those fuckers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. that beatdown was completely unnecessary, illegal, and irresponsible.

a group of fucking gym rats with weapons attacking one person who almost stole a bike.

That looked like it was in China or something, so the law probably doesn't give a crap.

So when is there an acceptable level of "compassion" for someone who does something morally wrong? The thief was trying to steal something. Does it matter if it was a bicycle? What if it was $10, or a priceless keychain? What if it was someones life? Murdering someone is no different from taking/stealing their life.

People are *generally* punished on the damage they cause rather than the action(s) they took. We as humans are distracted by the damage/effect that we lose sight of the real sin/fault. The man tried to steal. Why does it matter the apparent worth of the object being stolen? Why aren't actions punished instead of the damage (or potential damage) caused by the actions?

A thief is a thief is a thief. I don't care if they steal $5 from a wallet or a brand new Porsche 991 Turbo. They stole. They are guilty of that. They should be punished accordingly. Society has no room for degenerates that disturb an otherwise peaceful society. Yet, we allow it. When society takes it upon themselves to punish wrong and evil deeds, you chastize them? Who's side are you on? If that's the case, then would-be criminals who's attempts are foiled should go unpunished. Is that truely your resolve?

You shouldn't draw the line by placing value or assessing the damage or possible damage. The action is or is not. It is absolute, as should be the punishment. By tollerating evil, you allow its filth to spread.

That is all.

Your point is understandable but relatively moot; you can't punish every crime or amoral act with the same severity. Its just not within the scope of our 'social contract' here in America. Should he have gotten his ass whooped? Hmmm, I dunno, and with that said if you commit such acts you open a myriad of punishments that could or could not be appropiate, legally or morally. Basically, if you steal and get your ass whoop it should be expected.

So if I reach inside a vending machine and steal a bag of chips, you think I should be punished as severely as as a con-man who defrauds an old couple out of their life savings?

For me, evil = hurting people. The more your crime hurts people (in full knowledge that it's going to hurt them) the more evil it is. And the more severely you deserve to be punished. For me this is self-evident.

wtf

and here in america we have a justice system. it's not perfect, but a 5 on 1 beatdown with WEAPONS (i mean really, what kind of chicken shit enters a 5 on 1 fight with a weapon?) is beyond any sort of "social justice"

I don't even have a problem with someone trying to stop harm to themselves or their property on their own, but once that act is prevented, any further steps (such as an assault in this case) is retaliation and not prevention. Nobody appointed that mob judge/jury.

I think this thief got exactly what he deserved. They should of beat him with the bike. I'll assume anyone that defends thieves have never had something valuable stolen from them. I've had my house broken into and a car stolen, if I had caught either of the thieves I would have happily shot them and faced the consequences.

Here comes the argument that a life is more important than personal property....GO

nobody here is saying the thief was in the right. I didn't know it was in china so i guess things are different there with different rights and justice systems and things. (like getting executed for being in porn and kim jung II jr's ex-girlfriend)

but over here in the civilized worled innocent until proven guilty is here for a reason. mobs roaming the streets instilling "justice" would cause udder chaos.

^^Innocent until proven guilty? The fucker had the bike in his hands when they stopped him. The only thing wrong with that video is that they didn't beat the kid hard enough to teach him never to steal again or make him incapable of riding.

i agree, but physical force should have only been used to stop him from stealing the bike. not for retribution or punishment. (which was the case in this video)

If you keep reading, there's also something in there about cruel and unusual punishments--a phrase that implies punishments should be commensurate with the crime and damage done.

If he is not punished how will he learn to never steal again? Do you know what happens to thieves in our criminal system? Slap on the wrist and they are back out again. Its bullshit.

One of the YouTube comments says that the nuggets video is real but that it as received a voice-over.

Either way, her punishment is obvious: she should be force fed 5 pounds of nuggets. That should teach her!

1) it's Asia, bikes are WAY more important to people's livelihoods over there, so the excessive beat down was worth it, to them. It's like taking someone's car.

2) it's Asia, their police are less honorable and rule-bound as ours, it makes sense street justice was doled out. Street justice is very effective, but it only takes 1 psycho taking things too far before no one is allowed to beat anyone up and you HAVE to call the cops.

I've had two bikes stolen (in college), my house broken into and multiple electronics stolen, my parent's house broken into and multiple guns stolen, my car broken into and my stereo stolen... and i think this was excessive. sure, i wish i could have caught the people who stole my items, and i wouldn't mind seeing them get a light beating, but a 5 on 1 total beatdown with a chance of permanent damage with weapons is excessive. if they'd caught him and got in a few good licks and held him for the cops, i'd think it was awesome, but they went too far. it's a fucking bike.

people applauding the excessive beating of a guy for stealing a bike aren't any better than a petty thief. don't fool yourself into thinking you're not a shitty person.

The thief instigated by trying to steal a bike. It's not like he was left laying there crippled. He got his ass whooped, probably pretty bad too. But at the end of it, he could still move around. What if it was just 2 on 1. Or 1 on 1? Does the numbers really matter? Should the thief be allowed to escape punishment for breaking the law?

how do you rationalize a person defending their property (or someone elses for that matter) being similar to a thief?

Quote :
"I've had two bikes stolen (in college), "

I've had one bike stolen in college. I looked for a year on craigslist and local shops for my beloved bike. If I caught the person who stole mine, I would have tackled them and whooped their ass on the spot. That person is still out there. Possibly even stole more bikes. If they do it once, they're not going to stop. They'll do it again, and again... Society shouldn't make room for scum who steal. I don't know why people sympathize with leeches.

just a FYI, the line between 5 guys piled on top of 1 guy, subduing him.....and 5 guys piled on top of 1 guy causing him to suffocate is razor thin.

Not saying the group was piled on top of him or anything. Just drawing attention to the fact that 5 on 1 can turn deadly quickfast. The force applied multiplies fast, without the knowledge of of the individuals involved.
