I recently bought an Iphone 5, and I've never owned a smartphone before. I'm pretty careful with my crap, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy the AppleCare Protection+. The offer basically covers damage to the device and battery replacement for two years. There's a part of me which wants to get it, but another part that thinks it's a jip (it costs 100). Does any tech savvy person have a say in this here?

screen cover + case will protect you from 99% of the stuff that will go wrong with your phone for 30% of the cost. If you happen to shatter the glass, the cost for the materials to replace it yourself are still cheaper than the care plan.

And the apple store does everything in it's power to avoid actually coming through for their care plan. Or so I've heard

You're not wrong about the apple store trying to avoid it's customers. I've experienced that to some degree. I've called the people at apple about coming into the store, and they suggested I talk to them instead. I'm more concerned about the phone's battery lasting more so than damaging the phone.

Who is your carrier? Have you considered getting insurance through them?

Not everyone is technically capable of replacing parts on their phone.

You won't need a new battery for the phone until after the warranty expires...

...But I'm sure they'll let you extend it for another two years for $100

I can't imagine carrying around something with a $400+ replacement value without having some sort of insurance.

Not that this applies to the OP, but if you are prone to breaking your phone, Best Buy's $15/month plan is pretty solid due to it's 0$ deductible/replacement fee. I asked AT&T how much they charge to replace an iPhone 5 under their insurance and the dude told me $300

Not really a bad move especially if he got it for < $99

I don't really think I'm going out on a limb here by saying 'I doubt it'.

This is complete and utter bullshit by the way. I had Applecare+ on my iPad and when the screen cracked they took one look at it, went into the back and brought me out a brand new one and I was on my way in less than 5 minutes. I also have a similar story about my iPhone 4 with a broken home button. And I've never heard anything to suggest that this isn't SOP from Apple.

^^Addendum to that ... make an appointment online, don't just go in to the store and expect to be taken care of, they're busy, and appointments take priority (as they should).
