Thought his performance in the first episode was pretty impressive. Can't wait to see more."

He's in his McConaugheissance.

went back and read that grantland review after seeing as much of this show as that writer saw. I think it's shaping up really nicely so far. his whole argument for being "exceptional but not great" essentially boils down to it not providing any relief from how grim it is, which doesn't take away from the show's overall quality. that review could've saved everyone a lot of time by simply saying, "I didn't handle this well. it's just not for me."

I like the gloomy nature of this show. It makes it feel about as realistic as any detective show I can remember seeing lately. It's interesting to see a crime show not focused on solving the crime but in exploring how two people change because of it and because of their jobs in general.

He didn't look like a "monster" to me. He looked like a white trash dude who was making drugs in the shipping container in his yard. Not wearing any clothes so his clothes won't smell terrible and wearing the gas mask because of all the toxic fumes. Looked like a wanna-be Walter White.

But enjoying the show so far, esp. McConaughey.

or Walter white is a wannabe reggie ledeux since this was 1995. half naked dude with a gas mask and a machete who at this point is presumably a serial killer committing ritualistic murder is pretty scary.

Think based on how the show has progressed with them looking back on this case while it looks like another case is actively going on, wouldn't surprise me if whoever they DO finger in 1995 turns out to be the wrong person.

Calling it: With the reference to Carcosa in Dora's diary and that associate of hers saying she'd said she'd met "a king," this show is gonna wind up having a fuckin' Hastur cult in it, and the detectives are going to wind up having to murder every last lunatic to stop the King in Yellow from manifesting.

Was episode 3 the first time we saw the two new detectives on screen the same time as Hart? I think in the previous two episodes we just saw Hart talking directly to the camera (and the cops off screen)? Correct me if I'm wrong.

The scenes with Cohle show lots of reaction shots and responsive dialogue from the other two guys. It's more of an open dialogue / conversation compared with a more "interrogation" feel in Hart's scenes. Hart also gets a bit agitated and defensive during the conversations (maybe like someone being interrogated) while Cohle seems easy peasy.

I know this could mean nothing and it could just be showing the differences / personalities of the characters, but it was interesting nonetheless. Might be telling later on in explaining further motivations of the new detectives?

Also,

Remus mows the lawn.

^^I was thinking along the same lines. I actually thought Hart could be handcuffed to the chair since they weren't showing his hands under the table. Later they did end up showing him making hand motions so that blew that theory. Still, their interviews are very different, but both their interviews are very prying of their personal lives. I'm very interested to see how they are related to the new murder - it has to be much more than similar, repeat, or a copycat case.

my thought is that Marty's interview is at his job, whereas Cohle's is at the interviewer's office b/c Cohle is doing some shit work (forgot what he said he was doing).

Both interviews are taking place at the same location. Same building, same table. Just different seating locations and camera angles.

^^really?

I also had the impression that they were interviewing Hart at his new job wherever he is and Rust came into their office. You could be right, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would indicate either really.

The only thing I can think that's definite is when they're interviewing Hart he's got a lot of light behind him, much more than seems to be in the room when interviewing Rust, regardless of what angle it is. I suppose it could be different times of day...

Just realized that the preacher was Eli from Boardwalk Empire! HBO does like to re-use their actors every now and then. I remember Edmure Tully in GoT was the same guy who played Brutus in Rome back in 2005.

New fave show, behind GoT and HIMYM (sorry - addict)

We've spent time discussing/debating the issues and values of the characters of this show ever since it started. Matthew McConaughey has done some questionable work, but is absolutely perfect in this show. Woody is amazing as always.

[Edited on February 4, 2014 at 10:53 PM. Reason : maybe ahead of HIMYM, but still addicted to that storyline]

I love this show so much.

But I would still watch religiously if it were just based on older Rust living behind a bar, drinking everyday, and talking about his views on life and all things They could call it L-I-V-I-N as a Puppet in the Gutter

After watching that final scene I had to rewind it immediately to double check that it was in fact one long continuous shot. It was intense.

It was a great shot, but I highly doubt it was one continuous take. There are plenty of places where there could have been edits (which means, there probably were edits).

Just doing something as relatively mundane as the long take in Goodfellas is exceedingly difficult, forget a six minute action scene spanning indoor and outdoor areas.

Still, fun to watch.

[Edited on February 10, 2014 at 11:35 PM. Reason : I know the director said it was one take. He be lying.]

One of the best scenes ever on TV?

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1722001/true-detective-long-take.jhtml

Quote :
"All told, the sequence clocks in at around six minutes. Fukunaga and the crew ran through the whole thing seven times while the cameras were rolling. The director built in possible edit points if two takes had to be combined to make the perfect version of the shot, but anyone who is wondering should know that the sequence everyone saw in the episode is, in fact, a true single take and one of the great achievements of filmmaking for television.

Agree to disagree.

If you look at my edit text I was referencing the fact that the director says it was one long shot, but I still think he's lying. Just like they swore up and down that all the long shots in Children of Men were one continuous take...

Like I said, I thought it was great but the fact is it's 2014 so anyone who tells you they did a ridiculously complicated action sequence in one continuous take is probably lying. Occam's Razor.

Also I watched the interview room(s) a bit closer this time and I won't disagree as much as before that it might be the same room, just with sitting positions reversed

Okay so I'm a little unclear as to what exactly just happened so someone please correct/add details if I am missing something...

- They stopped/killed Ladoux and figured that the case was closed and all was good up until 2002 when Russ was interrogating that guy and he started talking about the Yellow King.
- Shortly after talking about the Yellow King, the guy was either somehow killed or convinced to kill himself.
- This implies that there is some kind of coverup here, with Ladoux just being a pawn for the real killer and something a lot bigger is at play.
- After Russ heard about the Yellow King from dude in jail and he turned up dead, Russ followed up on some of his old leads and found a bunch of those stick things, confirming that the killer is still around. This is around the time that Russ went a little crazy and got into heavier drinking, so perhaps he uncovered something so sinister that it caused him to quit the police force and go off the grid. Perhaps trying to track down the Yellow King or something?
- In present day after Russ showed back up, the preacher died and Russ has been seen around the crime scene of the recent killings. The police see him as a major suspect. Maybe his storage locker has his findings about the Yellow King and a bigger conspiracy?
