We Don’t Charge by the Gallon: A Story of Life in Wendell –

Yesterday, while doing some yard work, my lawn mower ran out of gas and as luck goes, so was the gas can; a trip to the local gas station, let's call it Ralphino's, was in order. The station requires prepayment for cash, so I walk in and tell the cashier I need 5 Gallons of gas on pump 1. Now, I do this about every month, and as a true testament to the intellectual capabilities of the cashiers, the request for 5 gallons (not dollars) of gas typically results in a bit of mental acrobatics, but they eventually pull out the ol' calculator and I'm on my way. But yesterday was different. This was a new-to-me cashier, and if the other cashiers went through mental acrobatics for this request, this lady was a full on mental circus.

Upon my request for 5 gallons, she says "Ok" and rings up $5.00. I said, "Sorry, I need 5 GALLONS, not $5" to which she supplied, "Yeh, 5, that's what I rung up". Enter the clowns. I said, "no, that's $5, I want 5 gallons, so it should be about $17-$18". The look of confusion at this point was far outdone by her reply... with that southern girl smirk and laugh (as to say, “bless your heart” aka “aww you're so dumb”), she says "oh, we don't charge by the gallon". Now I'm the confused one, so I ask, "how much is a gallon of gas", to which Einstein replies, "$3.66", and I ask, "so how much would five of those be?". Her next reply won an oscar: "Are you serious? Are you trying to trick me?" I replied that I was not, that I just wanted 5 gallons of gas which would be about $17. She says, "no, that's not how it works, you'll see, I'm pretty sure I did this right."

Having not purchased tickets for this particular circus, I said fine and went outside to pump the gas, thinking, maybe I've just got one heck of a deal on gas... so I squeeze the handle and viola! Nothing comes out. Even though I'm parked at pump 1 and asked for gas at pump 1, she put it on pump 2. This lady is awesome.

Anywho, pump 2 actually works... for all of $2 worth of gas. Luckily, reentry to the circus is allowed. I tell the cashier that the pump stopped after $2, she was surprised that she had done something wrong… I was not. She then asks me what I want to do, and as a broken record, I once again repeat my request for 5 gallons, minus what I’ve already pumped. And boom goes the dynamite. $3 is input to the register. I once again explain the request and math. At this point, some psychologists would label me insane for repeating the same task and expecting a different result. This is why psychology is bullshit – this lady is insane, not me. Losing all hope, I say, “just open the pump and I’ll come back in and pay what I owe” I was ecstatic that she obliged. Movement. On to the elephant show.

I go outside and fill my gas can, which comes to a total of $15.67 (remember, I’ve already paid $5 but got only $2 worth).

The next act was priceless… fire jugglers. I go in to pay and she seems a bit surprised to see a total of $15.67, saying, “I don’t think this is right”. I say, it’s right, here’s $20. Now she is completely lost on how to remedy the $5 paid, the $2 received, the $15.67 owed, and $20 given. This was more entertaining than watching fire jugglers catching the fire end of their sticks. She then proceeds to write down all of the math… maybe there’s hope… she calculates a grand total due of…. $18.67. David Effin Copperfield. I said, that’s not right, I paid $5, got $2, you owe me $3 from that, I owe you $15.67, minus the $3 you owe me, so $12.67. She would have none of that. Now she looked annoyed. I thought I was looking into a mirror, as we had the same exact facial expression, but my hair isn’t that long, so mirror it was not. Concluding that I will never get Donald Trump here to give me credit for the $3 owed, I sigh and leave, to the reply of, “I still think you’re trying to trick me”.

I mean really though, what kind of dickhead demands to pay by the gallon, especially in a situation where the person can't comprehend what that means.

^ Da fuck.

I pay for gas with cash all the time.

I ain't about to get my card skimmed at a damn gas pump. Am I liable for the fraud? no... but I ain't about to get my shit compromised just because my money is insured...

3.66*5 isn't hard.

you're a lot more likely to get your shit compromised by using a card to pay in a restaurant. i like my chances. the bank will eat it anyway.

regardless, I don't give a fuck about having to go in, pay, have the pump started, and possibly guess at how much it cost to top off my tank.

I hate diesel pumps the most... the ones off to the side. I've had to go in, argue with the attendant because I don't have cash and I'm sure as hell not leaving my card with the attendant, so I spend a few minutes counter-offering my license as collateral.

This is true. I guess I'm one of those crazy rare birds that uses cash 95% of the time then.

Here is one consequence of people's stupidity

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/11/unintended-pregnancy-_n_3906668.html

Quote :
"About half of the of the 6.7 million pregnancies in the U.S. each year are unplanned, according to a new state-level analysis by the Guttmacher Institute. The unintended pregnancy rate is a standout in the industrialized world, and has remained nearly flat since the 1980s despite advances in birth control technology and availability.

Women with incomes at or below the federal poverty line are five times more likely than those at the highest income levels to become pregnant by accident — and unintended pregnancies have become increasingly clustered among the poor in recent years. Most of the births resulting from unplanned pregnancies are publicly funded, and they aren't cheap.

As family planning budgets are slashed across the nation, unintended pregnancy remains the main reason for abortion, a procedure three in 10 American women have by age 45."

Several links within that text, click article link to see.

After reading all that, the only takeaway is that millions of people in the US don't know how babby is made, or more likely, they are plain stupid. And irresponsible, even though they are poor.

^^^. Agreed.

Why is Delaware in the highest category? Is it a poor state? High percentage of blacks? Afaik, the answer is no to both.

There is definitely correlation. And correlation does not mean causation.
