I dont get it, why dont they just disassemble it? Do they plan on trying to fix it? Seems like a lot of effort to stand it up

disclaimer: I know nothing about this operation or the finer details of marine salvaging

From what I've read; they first need to get it upright, which is what they're doing now. They've built a cradle or some structure next to the wreck that they ship will settle into. Once it's resting there I think they're going to try and patch it up, pump the water out and tow it off.

looks to me like one end is turning and one is not

this would be a lot more entertaining if they had hired some rednecks from eastern nc to do it.

They want to recover the two missing bodies. (which seems weird to me, there cant be much to recover at this point)

Also they are worried about pollution since it is so close to shore.

I think disassembly is the end goal, they just have to get it somewhere they can safely do so.

It is pretty much in slow motion, you can come back to it every 5-10 mins and see some progress, but I think its supposed to to take all day.

I have it up on my left monitor and working on the right one.

looks like they are making some progress

I wonder if they are filling those huge boxes with water to serve as a counterweight yet. They are supposedly turning the ship with cables, and those boxes are to pull it back lever.

I hope that graphic is incorrect. Seems like you'd want a holdback cable at the top of the caissons on the port side.

^yes. I imagine Discovery is there filming as well. It'll make for a pretty decent special in a few weeks/months.

are they going to continue this into the evening? It's about 6PM local time and getting dark. Don't know if they need daylight to see or what.

its currently sitting on a support platform

now they are using a robot sub to check out the damage

the next phase is to attach something like 15 ballasts to each side to float it to a port for dismantling
