Quote : | "SHELBY, N.C. — Health officials say they're interviewing people who visited a Shelby church barbeque dinner that left more than 70 people sickened by salmonella. Cleveland County Health Department officials say the outbreak put 13 people into hospitals. Health officials say only three people remained in hospitals Friday, when the total sickened reached 71. The nine people were reported ill Tuesday.
Officials say interviews will help find the cause of the outbreak linked to the barbecue fundraiser at Sandy Plains Baptist Church on Sept. 7.
Sandy Plain Baptist is nearly 160 years old and has sponsored the barbecue event for 50 years. Proceeds finance missions and a Christmas nativity scene. Pastor Garin Hill says up to 5,000 people come for barbecue pork and chicken and such an outbreak has never happened before." |

I'd wager it was some potato salad that sat outside for hours or something other than the bbq itself 9/21/2013 1:27:34 PM

Putting ketchup in pork BBQ sauce is a sin. God is punishing those heathens. 9/21/2013 4:16:48 PM

I bet it was the fault of some fuckin old people who think it's fine to leave food out overnight.
I went to my filipina friend's house thursday night, who lives with her old ass french canadian mother-in-law. The old lady had cooked like 10 or 20 pounds of ground beef for something with pasta on sunday and left it sitting out on the counter overnight in a container that was way too huge to refrigerate. They were planning to put it outside overnight, where the temperatures were around 60°. I was like dude, when I come for the party you better show me whatever has that meat in it, cuz I ain't eatin that shit. we ended up transferring it into something that would fit in the fridge and the old lady was annoyed. oh well, she is an idiot. I have a tiny bit more respect for her son, as he managed to survive to adulthood under those conditions. 9/21/2013 4:39:19 PM

My grandmother leaves stuff out all the time. Ranch dressing and parmesean cheese are two top contenders. And sometimes if she cooks something she just leaves the leftovers in the pot on the stove and turns it back on for the next meal. 9/21/2013 4:41:11 PM

well, fortunately for you, the salad dressing and dried cheese are probably the least horrible things to leave out, due to pH and moisture and salt content, respectively. I've done the leave stuff on the stove thing a few times, but the stuff was boiling hot when I turned it off and left it there, so the food and the pot should have been pretty bacteria-free at that point, and stayed that way until the pot was opened (there was a tight seal, I used a pot where the lid got vacuumed on as it cooled). plus, I would never, never serve that to other people. 9/21/2013 4:58:19 PM

I'm not too worried about it usually, but now that I'm pregnant I make sure that everything gets cooked to death at her house. We had ham the other day and she asked me if it was OK. I said as long as it was cooked to steaming, and her response was that it was cooked three days ago, lol. I said it needed to be cooked now so she just tossed my share in to the bean pot. Grandmas are funny. 9/21/2013 5:02:23 PM

Anyone tried The Pit? I've heard mixed reviews, like decent food but pricey. 9/21/2013 7:34:40 PM

I haven't seen BBQ in Western NC. I have seen lots of pork drowned with some sort of ketchup/molasses mix though. 9/22/2013 8:02:56 PM
