Well done, otherwise it needs more time on the grill.

Heinz 57 wakes up the flavor.

^^I hope you're saying if the steak is well done, it could use some condiment

Cause if a steak is medium rare, which is the only way a steak should be cooked and consumed, it doesn't need anything

Besides, why make a steak when you can just through up some ground beef and make burgers.

Still needs salt and pepper.

Or at the very least salt. Hard to get a good crust with no salt.

But salt pulls the moisture out of the steak!
But you cant cook a steak properly without a 500* cast-iron skillet
But you have to sear the steak first to seal the juices in
But you have to let the steak warm to room temperature BEFORE you put the salt on

I mean, I'll do au poivre or something every once in a while, but it doesn't NEED it. A1 and Heinz 57 are fucking shameful, and if you put them on a steak, you should just save your money and eat some Wonder Bread with Jif on it instead.

I don't mind getting new/different ideas for cooking, though nothing in here so far is new/different, but some of y'all are way up on your soap boxes about steak. Steak. A friggin steak.

Salt, pepper. Medium rare any which way you want to cook it is perfect.

i found my favorite way to cook a thick filet is:

very lightly oil/saltpepper and sear on all sides using a hot cast iron skillet..15-20 seconds per side

then i put that in the oven on a drip tray and broil for ~15min

tastes better than any other method ive tried so far

It doesn't need anything, true.

But I'm trying to bring back steak butters, even on good steaks.

Salted butter can be great, but most cooks and restaurants tend to drown the steak in it and I feel like I'm getting the runs before I even finish the meal.

We raise grass-fed beef so if you cook it quickly over a hot flame it does not turn out as well. I like to put a little garlic, salt, and pepper on it and cook it over a low charcoal fire to about medium rare. I also like a little horseradish on beef after it is cooked. Unless is it something like stew beef that is tough and cooked in liquid, you can cook the flavor right out of a piece of beef. Please, folks, if you are going to cook a steak to death, make sure it's a cheap one. Once you reduce cattle flesh to charred remains, the quality of the original steak won't matter much.

I don't think the title of this thread is necessarily dissing on salt, pepper or butter...or even marinades

I think its mostly referring to people that think its a necessity to use your fork and knife to cut a bite of steak off and dip it in heinz 57 / a1 / ketchup / something...or pour a bunch of steak sauce on it...which isn't necessary

although i will say if its some shitty steak from a half ass restaurant or something burnt to a crisp, sure, add something for flavor

but if you order a good steak from a Ruths Chris / Mortons / etc, you should try it without condiments...you're gonna like the way you look it tastes...i guarantee it

Yes. I've had many shitty steaks in the Navy that required saving.

This poster knows what's up... in fact, that's how they serve steaks in most Michelin starred restaurants. I think they also put a nice dollop of mayo on top.

I just microwaved a perfectly prepared NY strip on high for several minutes.

So, yeah, I'm fucking retarded, and my whole day is ruined.

But several minutes? It just needs a minute.
