If you read the details in the indictment this guy's in trouble for a lot more than just running Silk Road. He allegedly used hired thugs and hit men to deal with trouble causing users on the site including hiring a hitman to kill one user for $120k and claiming he had already had another one killed for $80k.

The complaint also notes that Canadian authorities had no record of a homicide in that area on or around that date, so it could have been a scam on the part of those two Silk Road users (who could be the same person), and DPR's remark about having paid much less for a "clean hit" earlier could have been a lie, a lowball tactic; it didn't actually charge Ulbricht in connection with the attempt to call a hit on someone, so the Feds might not have believed they had enough evidence to show probable cause, but still threw it in to show his character isn't as noble as his regurgitations of von Mises would have it seem.

I remember reading that story in a Forbes interview, but now I'm thinking that was a lie too: Early in the history of the Silk Road, Ulbricht posted on bitcointalk about getting Web designers for SR, mentioning a GMail account tied to his real-life identity, and he posted a question on StackOverflow about using curl via PHP to fetch content over Tor for a hidden service, first under his real name, changed to an alias; they built up a case showing that he was almost surely in control of the site the whole way through until he got caught.

Now I'm curious to know where the hidden service was hosted; all the complaint says is that it was hosted in a foreign country; other servers were in the US, as well as several other countries, but I'm talking about the main website.
It's curious that they didn't put that sort of splash image on the many .onion sites run out of Freedom Hosting after they nabbed its owner and seized the servers.

I don't know about the permission properties involved with, but I assume it's easy to copy, but again just because you can copy it doesn't mean you can open it or bypass any sort of encryption. But I have never used this stuff so I'm not an expert.
